I'm new to this and a little confused. What is the difference between a CV and a Resume? I looked up examples online of CV and they look just like a resume.
A resume is a brief synopsis of the qualifications and work history of an applicant. A curriculum vitae (cv) is normally used in academia and in European countries though the resume is becoming more popular there. In the USofA the terms are used interchangeably but usually means a resume is the format expected. A cv includes references to any publications you have written, conferences where you gave a presentation or served on a panel, teaching experience typically in academia not workplace, plus education and work history. A resume typically focuses on the information necessary to get you an interview for a job outside academia. There is more to the distinctions though this should give you an idea.
The main difference is that in a CV your education comes first in a very clear format. Academic experience and publications are listed separately from 'professional' experiences. In a resume, although there are many types, generally you list your work experience in chronological order followed by your education. When I am reviewing CVs, the first thing I am doing is sorting based upon academic credentials, if it is not clear, or not right at the top, I generally dismiss the applicant. The most concise and best CV format I have seen starts with: Short Summary: I am wonderful because... Education: Some Good School, Ph.D. Theoretical Physics, 2006 The Same School, MS Mathematics, 2000 A Different School, BS Chemical Engineering, 1997 Teaching Experience: ...and so on...
A CV should always show what a person has published (produced), but a resume will not always do that.
A resume is short and concise... like industry. (mine is about 4 pages) A CV goes on and on about every little detail to show how important you are (mine is like 10 pages). Format, emphasis, and audience is different.
