I am having a hard time finding schools that offer PHDs in English. Looking for something RA and low cost. Currently enolled in the WNMU master's program but want to transfer credits from there into a PHD. Anyone know anything about this?
Old Dominion University www.odu.edu offers a PhD in English by distance learning. The Union Institute & University offers a short residency PhD in Humanities & Culture, from which one could "carve out" a concentration in English. Indiana University of Pennsylvania www.iup.edu offers a five-summer PhD in English.
I have some experience teachiong english in Asia, but the MBA i just finished isnt making much of a difference here. Also, the online schools i've sent resumes to don't seem interested. I do have a BA in english, so I think I am just going to carry that further and see what kind of teaching jobs come up.
Texas Tech Texas Tech http://www.english.ttu.edu/tcr/PhDTCR/default.asp has a PhD in Technical Communication and Rhetoric that appears very flexible. It is offered as an online program, but the diploma doesn't indicate it is any different than the oncampus program. It also doesn't require that your masters degree be in English (although this may increase the number of courses you have to take). According to the site, they like having candidates with different backgrounds.
I'd recommend going with either Old Dominion University (ODU) or Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). A PhD in Humanities & Culture with a "carved out" concentration in English is just not the same thing as a plain PhD in English.
Hi Rcox - From your original post I thought you were looking for a doctoral program in English Literature. But then I thought that you were looking for something more like communication, technical writing, professional writing, etc. Do you have a preference?
I'm trying to go for the English Lit route. The OD option seems a little expensive but the most reputable. I am thinking that there will probably more options in the future, I wonder if just waiting is really the best choice.
