Hey Folks, I was hoping that some of you might be able to assist me in my evaluation of a potential school to complete a PhD at via DL that is RA. The school that I’m considering is Saybrook Graduate School & Research Center (www.saybrook.edu) in San Francisco. I’m considering the PhD in Organizational Systems Inquiry. Saybrook is regionally accredited by WASC and is mentioned in several of the Bear Guides but the descriptions are very limited. I’m curious to learn more about Saybrook and hopefully hear from folks who have had positive or negative experiences with the school. Anything that you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to help me answer my many questions as I consider applying. Enjoy, Dave
Hi there, Im also considering Saybrook for the Psych PhD. I eventually want to become licensed and DL is not a necessity for me at all, BUT I love Saybrooks orientation in humanistic/existential psych. From the research I've done on the school, it would be a perfect "fit" for me. But its expensive and I already have two degrees from Pepperdine University, which aint cheap. The faculty at Saybrook seems top notch for a DL school, and in its niche I think Saybrook is fairly well respected.
An acquaintence of mine is very pleased with the Saybrook program, particularly the faculty. Christopher
Saybrook, always small and narrow in focus, is one of the pioneers of short-residency doctoral training. It has enjoyed the services of many people well-respected in humanistic psychology, including Carl Rogers and Clark Moustakas. The chancellor of Capella, Bruce Francis, used to head up Saybrook. (I hope I'm getting this right...I'm away from my resources while writing this off the top of my head.) Rich Douglas
Rich: The chancellor of Capella, Bruce Francis, used to head up Saybrook. John: Former chancellor. Met with him yesterday. He's still full-time there, but has moved back to his real love, teaching (working with 30 doctoral students) and consulting, and moving from Minnesota to Florida. And still very positive about Saybrook, and very pleased with developments at Capella, including new impressive president. (And he provides this interesting gossip: Bernie Turner, founder and eventually seller of Walden -- his non-compete has expired, and well into his 70s, he is planning something new in this field.)
Could it be that Capella (my favorite DL school - Alumus 2000) is planning to open a center in Florida.....inside information John? Sounds plausible -- and would Mr. Turner be involved? ------------------ Howard Rodgers
When I spoke with Francis two years ago, he seemed quite the reluctant warrior, like his time "in the barrel" was up. I'm glad he's doing what he likes; he seemed like a good ol' egg. (Wish it woulda worked out somehow.) Rich Douglas
