In July 2001, Salem International University entered into a partnership with Informatics Holdings Ltd., a private school registered with the Ministry of Education of Singapore. Through this partnership Salem International University will remain a private, not-for-profit institution of higher learning, and will work with Informatics Holdings Ltd., a for-profit business, to provide both on-campus and on-line education to students from around the world. This is a unique relationship and one of the first for an American institution of higher learning.

  2. Salem International University was Salem College, a tiny college in West Virginia. Along with a number of other lower-tier American colleges, it was bought in the late 80's or early 90's by the Teikyo Group of Japan, which was establishing "international" schools for Japanese students. In recent years, with the Japanese student population in the U.S. down, many of these "Teikyo" schools fell on hard times and were closed (e.g. Westmar and most recently Marycrest) or repackaged (e.g. Salem International University). This Singapore connection (which was announced almost a year ago) is just one aspect of the overall restructuring of the Teikyo Group's operations in the U.S.
