I was checking out both Southern New Hampshire University and Webster University's MS in Finance program and must say it looks like something I am actually looking for. I know I wanted to get an MBA, but based on the curriculum, I can actually start throwing my resume out there with some prospective employers once I'm around 60% to 70% into the program because of the amount of Finance courses they offer. I really don't care too much about management than I am on doing something Finance or Risk Management related. I noticed from the other post that Webster is tier 1 school. Both schools seems to provide a good range of finance courses. The other option is to take additional finance classes at APU and still save a lot of money, but it seems that SNHU and Webster would provide more open doors?

I have found SNHU ridiculously expensive, considering that they are relatively unknown. But they seem to have a talent for offering curricula that people find relevant. I really like their graduate program in PR and haven't found a comparable curriculum anywhere else.

I do not know much about SNHU's graduate programs, but my brother has been a student there since 2007 and will earn 2 bachelor degrees in 2010 from there. He has loved it, said the courses are challenging and hes learned quite a bit. I know of some military friends who are attending Webster at one of the education centers on a base here in NC, the school has quite a military presence. Both are in the MBA program and also have good things to say about Webster.

If you added some of the financial certifications with either an MBA or a masters of finance, then that would probably boost your chances to work in finance. Such as CFM, CFA, CFP.

If I go with MBA in Finance, these are the options that I see:

Webster MBA in Finance $22,680 (tier 1 school)
    Bellevue MBA in Finance $15,480
    APU MBA in Finance $9,900
APU MBA in Finance w/18 finance graduate credits $11,550

Why wait - I would would put it on your resume as soon as you start your first course; something like "Enrolled in MBA at APU (graduation planned for December 2011)."

I would go with the lowest cost MBA - you can then spend the difference on another degree, certification, or join a professional association.

Just curious but why is Webster a tier 1 school?

That's true because I can consider other designations in Finance. Plus, my wife and son is also going to college full-time, and to think about it, based on the income I am already making, my wife's ROI would be much higher once she gets her degree.

I'm starting to think that an MS in Finance is going to compliment my CPCU and Associate in Risk Management designations that I will get in the next year. The Webster University MS in Finance has 33 of the 36 units in math, Acct, and Finance, and 27 units in Finance. The other MBA programs have 12 to 15 units in Finance. I would think my chances of getting into Finance / Risk Analyst position would be good with Webster. I noticed some of the schools have a lot of graduates teaching courses and appears they have a large network of graduates around the world. I know I can go to another school for less and get certificates, but I can't seem to find any other program for under 22K with the courses listed below into one program.

    Webster University - MS Finance
    1. BUSN 5760 Applied Business Statistics
    2. BUSN 6070 Management Accounting
    3. BUSN 6120 Managerial Economics
    4. FINC 5000 Finance
    5. FINC 5210 Investments
    6. FINC 5810 Capital Budgeting and Corporate Investments
    7. FINC 5830 Institutions and Financial Markets
    8. FINC 5840 International Finance
    9. FINC 5880 Advanced Corporate Finance
    10. FINC5870 Derivatives
    11. FINC5890 Finance Statement Analysis
    12. FINC 6290 Financial Strategies

I think after getting an MS in Finance and getting my foot in the door with another company and teaching part-time, I can always teach out the school I'm teaching's MBA program, or prospective employer to pay for an MBA like Brenau University that is only 6K because of my CPCU. My main goal is to get into Finance/Risk position first, teaching second, and finish MBA that would be paid.

I thought about APU, but the more I read about Webster the more I'm impressed with the curriculum. I couldn't find any good certificates with the same type of courses that would cover the same material as Webster's.

When I get around to my masters, I think that Webster would be the best bang for my buck.

Has anyone here completed a distance learning graduate degree with Webster?

    Do Webster vs. APU

3 points, Webster is a A vs. C for APU; Webster is a real BM school not just an on-line provider; Webster has a GREAT Doctorate program that is well known internationally.

    Cheers

Great, thanks. I'm getting my current schooling knocked out with the Post 9/11 GI Bill, so I'll only have to have student loans for my graduate degree.

I didn't know they were known internationally. Pretty good for a non-research school that does not offer PhDs (only a Doctor of Management)

Webster has extension campuses in Austria (Vienna), China (Shanghai, Chengdu, and Shenzhen), The Netherlands (Leiden), Switzerland (Geneva), Thailand (Bangkok, Cha-am) and the United Kingdom (London). All of these places offer graduate programs taught in English.

err, that program only has 10 units in Finance. I noticed in risk management or analyst positions require either Accounting or Finance degrees. I noticed there is so many additional and cheaper options for accounting verse finance degrees. Is that due to lack of instructors or is accounting a more popular option?

    Colorado

There is another MS Finance in Colorado which might be available all online. It used to be advertised as an online program, however it is not now. You should drop them a note to see if it can be done all online.

The online class schedule shows 5 possible courses available this spring toward this degree. I bet you can still do this all online.

Looks like tuition is a bit stiff but it's only a 30 credit program and it's an AASCB school.

I sent them an email on their MS in Finance. I know last week I tried getting information on their online mba and noticed they were not the most helpful people. I was getting the same kind of little snotty responses that was similar to CSU-Sacramento.

I'm almost thinking of getting a certificate in either accounting or finance first then start on the MBA program and not have to find too many graduate courses. I looked at UC Berkeley and UC Davis, but every time I clicked on the courses for finance it's closed for enrollment. LSU has very inexpensive courses in acct and might be easier to go that route. When I talk with prospective employers they just give me a generalized response that either acct of finance is fine.
