I live in the US, I work full time and am interested in Astronomy. I have a computer sci undergrad degree from a state uni.

Does anyone know of good Astronomy / Space - related graduate programs that are offered via distance learning or online?

Some residency - up to 1 month a year, is fine with me.

Have any of you attended such a DL Astronomy program?

Once I am done with the Masters, I may consider a PhD (DL or full time) thus I'd like the degree to be honorable in the US.

If by Space-Related you mean that an MA in Space Studies would suffice, look up American Military University www.apus.edu and the University of North Dakota www.und.edu. The MA and PhD in Astronomy are offered by thesis/dissertation-only format at some Aussie uni, but I'm nowhere near my Bears' Guides right now, so I can't say for sure which one.

Dr. John Wetsch, a sometimes contributor to degreeinfo, earned his Masters of Astronomy from University of Western Sydney (I recall tis program was moved JCU). You could try contacting him for an opinion (he is easy to find by Googling).

    Thanks, this is great info.

I suppose there are no distance PhD programs in Astronomy?

James Cook U offers both a Doctor of Astronomy and a Ph.D. in Astronomy by DL.

The nice feature of JCU is that you receive credentials at steps along the way:
    • Grad Cert
    • Grad Diploma
    • Masters
    • Doctor of Astronomy
    • Ph.D.

  7. That sounds like a great option for someone looking for qualifications in astronomy. While I don't know anything about astronomy, I can tell you that you can be confident in any dealings with JCU. Like all Australian universities, it operates under legislation. It is well known here in Queensland.

Bears' Guide 15th edition lists the University of South Africa www.unisa.ac.za as offering both the master's and doctorate in astronomy via dl (I'm guessing dissertation only).

Hi, I am new here but not new to DL. I have a Master of Astronomy from James Cook University and was in the History of Astronomy Dloctorate program there. Now I am continuing a PhD in the history of astronomy and astrophysics as a independent scholar. Am looking for a host uni.
