I guess it is because I haven't started my PhD program yet, but I am still partly looking at other programs than the one I chose. I just want to get one final Poll. Rank the DL schools that offer doctoral level degrees in a business discipline in order of which one you would select first.....all the way down to the one you would select last. I am not really looking for reasons, as I am totally drowning on all of the information contained in the catalogs. Rather, I am trying to gather data that will indicate the general opinion of this forum. Thanks in advance ------------------ Darren Cross BSB-Management, UoP MBA-Fontbonne College
Hi Darren I am at a loss too (I just posted the discussion re: CCU) and I can't wait to see the list that you get. There is simply too much information. I am now sorting through three online lists of schools (two US and one UK). Schools offering doctorates (particulary in business) aren't as common as others. And the RA schools are terribly expensive. So far, this would be my list, but I am not anywhere near finished. And beware...it contains non-RA schools... RA-schools: Walden Capella Non-RA schools: California Coast University Undecided: South California University for Professional Students (non-RA) Fielding Institute (RA) Nova University (RA) Cheers Karen B
Nova Southeastern Capella Fielding Walden Argosy Sarasota Sturt The other Australian schools Unisa Glasgow (if it is available yet) Purposely omitted: Unaccredited and DETC-accredited (like CSM and IMC). Rich Douglas
While we're on the subject, I traded e-mails with a charming representative from Charles Sturt University. It is possible for people residing in the U.S. to do the D.B.A., but it will require some (negotiable) FTF with your advisor. The program calls for two appearances before the school. The first is an introductory session, and doesn't seem avoidable. The second is when the doctoral candidate puts on a one-hour seminar about his/her doctoral project. (Essentially, a review of the literature and outline of the proposed research.) This can be done, according to their catalog, in one's own workplace. So that means one trip to Australia near the beginning of the program. The cost is remarkably low, less than $US9K. It wasn't clear whether or not books and materials were included, but it seems likely them come with the courses. The program is designed to be completed in about 3 years part-time for those entering with an MBA. Two years for coursework and one for the thesis. Quite nice, actually. Rich Douglas
Every week, our local paper has a feature in which 4 or 5 food experts do a taste test and rate many samples of a given product: corn flakes, spaghetti sauce, whatever. Typically the results are pretty much identical, with a few individual differences, probably statistically insignificant. And yet if they were rating six bowls of corn flakes and one bowl of horse manure, even with milk and sugar, you'd get six pretty much the same, with minor individual differences, and there would be a vastly lower rating (I think). In my book, same thing with schools. That's why I stopped doing rankings or ratings many years ago.
Off the top of my head....sorry! I would put Touro at the bottom of the RAs, but ahead of foreign degrees. I know people hate the Argosy name--I don't really care either way--but Sarasota was a pioneer in DL doctoral education. Rich Douglas
For the US Student only: Fielding Union Nova Southeastern - - - - - Walden and Argosy - Capella and Touro - - - - - - Go to Library and learn on my own - - - - - -(add lots of lines here) - Non-RA Options - None. Never. Waste of $$ and time. (The spacing is intentional.)
My ranking* 1. Top British DL Universities 1. Case Western Reserve University (DM) 3. UMUC (DM) 3. Nova Southeastern University 3. Union Institute & University 3. Fielding Institute 6. Top Australian DL Universities 6. Argosy/Sarasota 6. Walden University 6. Capella University 11. Touro International University 5. Top South African DL Universities 12. Mediocre British, Australian, and South African DL Universities 13. University of Phoenix (DM) 14. DETC 1st professional doctorates (University of St. Augustine) Or they could be grouped as follows: Group 1 --------- .Top British DL Universities .Case Western Reserve University (DM) Group 2 --------- .Nova Southeastern University .Union Institute & University .Fielding Institute Group 3 ---------- .Top Australian DL Universities .Argosy/Sarasota .Walden University .Capella University Group 4 ----------- .Touro International University .Top South African DL Universities .Other British, Australian, and South African DL Universities Group 5 ------------ .University of Phoenix (DM) .DETC 1st professional doctorates *This was based on the assumption that the doctoral degree will be used in USA.
I mentioned two in my post: the Canadian School of Management and International Management Centres. DETC accredits both, and both offer the doctorate. (DETC may consider the doctoral programs beyond their accreditation, but DETC does institutional accreditation, not programmatic. But that may change.) RTFP. Rich Douglas
Herbert, This is a reasonable ranking... definetly more solid advice than some of the others in this thread but I would propose some adjustments: 1. Top British DL Universities (Glasgow/Henley/any negotiated research docs from top schools) 1. Case Western Reserve 3. Other British DL Universities and Australian DL Universities** 4. Nova Southeastern 4. UMUC 4. Union 7. Argosy 7. Fielding 7. Waldon 7. Capella 7. Touro 12. South African Universities 13. University of Phoenix 14. DETC 15. State Approved 16. Unaccredited 17. Printed on your home computer Group 1: Top British and top quartiles of US Group 2: Other British and Australian Uni Group 3: Nova UMUC Union Group 4: Argosy Fielding Walden Capella Touro Group 5: South African Group 6: University of Phoenix Group 7: DETC Group 8: State Approved Group 9: Unaccredited/Approved Group 10: Printed on your home computer *also assuming the degree will be used in the US **Assumptions are: -British degrees have slightly higher utility than Australian and Australian than South African. -As noted by someone from Australia in another post, there is limited differentiation between Australian Universities (British is similar) -Degrees from generally accepted 1st & 2nd quar.US universities will have higher utility than many/most foreign degrees
How are the schools being rated (School’s performance/Cost for Tuition)? The individual needs should also be taken into account when establishing some sort of ranking system. During my research for selecting a Doctoral Program in business, I looked at various schools such as Nova (Alumni MPA ’97), Union, Argosy/Sarasota Walden and Touro. I had to select a school that had a) Regionally Accreditation, b) Reasonable Cost and c) my employer was willing to pay for my tuition. My employer requires that I attend class for at least half of the duration of the program. Therefore, a totally inter-net program was out of the question. Indicated below are schools that offered Doctoral Programs that are ranked accordingly based on my individual needs and they are follows: Doctoral Program/Ranking Rank School Cost *Total Tuition Accreditation Degree 1 Argosy 26000 13000 Regional DBA 2 Nova 36000 18000 Regional DBA 3 Union 40000 20000 Regional PhD *After Tuition Reimbursement
