I saw this parody last night on Saturday Night Live. Although it's meant to be funny, I think it points out the bias that still (unfortunately) exists against online programs. For the record, there is no University of Westfield Online.
I found it amusing how similar the fictional UoW logo looks compared to the UoP logo. You first see it about 20 seconds into the video.
My stepson works in hollywood and entertainment - he says it is one industry where degrees don't mean a thing. So maybe the writers of this skit had no idea of what they were talking about other than advertisements they had seen on TV or heard on the radio.
It's funny but I would rather have a distance education degree as opposed to the alternative which is none at all. Considering plenty of hollywood actors don't have degrees maybe it's simply jealousy.
How can I see this video from outside the US? Is there any chance to see this video from outside the US? I tried to find an alternative source but all the other sites are also restricted to the United States, like the original site. mintaru.
Yes, I did. However, the YouTube player doesn't play that video, It only says: "This content is not available in your area!"
Haven't watched very much TV lately, but just happen to see that on Saturday night. It wasn't funny to me at all. It Kind of ticked me off that they did that parody.
Yes, there is a bias against online schools. However, in general, University education is over rated nowadays. Most employers won't even bother to ask where did you go to school as the emphasis is mainly towards experience and professional certifications. The University is just a check mark for most employers. I rather have a BS from UoP with several professional certifications such as PMP, CPA or CFE than a BS from a brick and mortar school. Professional certifications are becoming more recognized in the business environment due to their international focus and standard. It is becoming irrelevant where you got your degree as long it is an accredited one.
Funny thing is I worked with several people in Southern California who had either UG or grad degrees from University of Phoenix (UoP) - all were non-DL degrees earned at local UoP campuses (although some specialized courses were held at my employers facility). I visited the UoP campus in Torrance several years ago and was quite impressed - it contained around a dozen or so classrooms and a library where one can access on-line books and journals. It was similar to branch campuses from universities such as Cal State, UC, and ERAU.
I saw it last night. I watched it here: www.hulu.com which is where I do all of my tv viewing. It's funny, it's a parody, it's SNL, that's what they DO. I found this quote on wikipedia - "Often, the most satisfying element of a good parody is seeing others mistake it for the genuine article." I think that if SNL is doing a skit, then clearly it signals distance learning has gone mainstream. (otherwise no one would "get" the joke)
Yes, I'm in B&H right now. Maybe we're too small for them to care enough to block us? Btw, one thing I did like about that video is the guy from Boston Legal.
Sometimes it is countries that block certain sites and sometimes it is individual internet providers. Often there is concern over copyright infringement for sites such as you-tube.
sorry , but I can watch it just fine from Afghanistan by the way..... let's keep a sense of humor, it is a parody from SNL that's what they do pick a subject and make fun of it.....
