I'm looking for a DL PhD or DBA in Business from a respected RA school. I have been reading this forum for a while now and have looked at Jonnie's DL page but I can't seem to find a school I like. I have looked at the typical DL schools but I would prefer a school that is at least known about by the average person. I would rather do the PhD in the evening or weekend since I have to work full-time so I can't attend a local college.

    Thanks

    John

    Some information on me:

    MBA Finance - National University
    BS - Southern Illinois University

Series 6, Series 63 and California State Life/Health Insurance License

The most reputable program I know of is the EDM (Executive Doctor of Management) at Case Western. The school is RA and AACSB. The program is incredibly expensive, but excellent in content. You'll spend weekends in Cleveland - but I believe it is well worth it.

A peer of mine completed the program and had no problem at all with degree acceptance.

You might also consider the Doctor of Management (DM) at UMUC or the PhD program at NJ Institute of Technology - but you have to do some residency in both cases.

Other DL options, including my beloved NSU, aren't bad - but you'll run into some issues with reputation in some quarters. At one school, I was denyed tenure track because I was an NSU grad. At another school (where I'm at now), I've had no problem at all.

    Regards - A ndy

I think that all Regionally Accredited Schools are respected within the Business/Academia Arena.

This all depends, which arena are you to trying to cater, specifically the Academia Arena.
If one is considering to get hired by Harvard/Yale University with D.L. learning degree; someone who has graduated from a brick mortar campus has a better chance of getting hired. Most importantly, is how you play the political game. If you were to do a search on the following schools on google.com Walden “Ph.D.”/Union Institute “PhD”, there are a number of their graduates that have done well and are teaching at Harvard/Yale.

Nova Southeastern University (Great School) has a number of their graduates teaching at one of the top brick mortar campus in the nation, (Ball State University, Distinguished Professor in Business,Donald Kuratko Nova DBA ‘84). I have taught at various colleges/universities (Adj. Prof) such as Uof M, FIU & FAU. My credentials were never questioned. Also, I have had good relationship with the Dean’s of each of these respective schools and I have been offered a tenure track position for future consideration at these schools as long as I pursue a Regionally Accredited Ph.D./DBA program.

By the way, I am an NSU Alumni (MPA ’97). Regionally accredited schools that you should consider for your DBA/PhD./DM Business Program are as follows:

    Nova Southeastern University DBA
    Union Institute & University, Ph.D.
    Argosy University DBA
    Touro University International PhD
    University of Phoenix D.M
    University of Maryland D.M.
    Case Western University D.M.

Would/should you consider Executive Leadership Ph.D./Ed.D. programs?

There are MANY of these programs in existence... some of the programs would include (not a comprehensive listing... just what comes to mind as I write):

    George Washington University Ed.D.
    Antioch University Ph.D.
    Regent University Ph.D./D.S.L.

    BruceP in Colorado Springs

On a side note, I thought the DM (Doctor of Management) was unique to the University of Phoenix. It seems a like a couple other schools also offer it -- assuming that's the degree being referred to.

Is it a relatively new degree? How is it received in both business and academia?

The DM is a fairly new idea. I suspect at Case Western it was an available label that conveys the idea that the degree is a doctorate (in management), but not a PhD. Case has a good PhD program - but it isn't available (and probably couldn't fit) into a DL model.

    There are three decent opportunities:

    1) University of Glasgow... prestigious, flexible, a little pricey
    2) Case... respected, requires residency, expensive, funny degree name
    3) University of Southern Queensland... solid, inexpensive, good program.

    I wouldn't touch any others.

Thank you for the replies. I’m still considering all the options at this point. Hopefully soon I will make up my mind and enroll.
