A fellow LE asked me about the usage of POST certification and college credits which got me on a hunt for some answers. I've been googling all day for answers and although I've found some information I was curious if anyone has any direct knowledge. Does TESC evaluate POST curriculums for credit? I'm not talking about a PLA but actually reviewing a syllabus and curriculum to see how it matches up with their courses like they do with the FEMA courses.

I see that many places accept POST certs toward credit which usually nets around 30 credit hours of 100 and 200 level courses but I can't find anything on TESC. Do any of you think it would be possible to have POST evaluated at another institution then enroll in one course then transfer the full credit via transcript? Too bad this doesn't benefit me since I already have those crdits through North Idaho College but it may benefit my buddy if something like this is possible.

I'm going to give TESC a call on my way home and update this thread accordingly but if you have any thoughts please feel free to post. Also, this doesn't have to be a TESC specific thread so if you have knowledge of other universities that grant credit for POST please post them here as well.

Quick update for all LE guys/gals. I spoke to TESC this afternoon and the only POST academies that have been evaluated by TESC is in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I was also told that obviously all ACE evaluated academies would qualify as well.

My buddy is going to see if his agency has had or can have their program evaluated so he can utilize his academy for credit. During my reading today I found a few instances where there seems to be opposition to using academy hours for credit but at least in my academy the courses mostly mirror those typically found in associates degree programs. I'll update once I do some more digging because I'm also interested in seeing if maybe the state level POST might be interested in assisting.

I received 16 units for my POST cert. back in the early 80's; post hours = 400 hours at that time.

When I was in LE in California, all the courses were already certified through the community college system for a set number of credits. I worked in Training for a large dept. and dealt with our POST Commission, but many officers were unaware that they could go to the CC that the training courses were run "through" and get a transcript showing their credit (w/o any evaluation process). Perhaps it's worth checking with your academy or training center. Good luck!

That's what I'm going to end up doing Dave. I called POST yesterday but they honestly didn't have a clue. I was pretty upset because they acted like they have never been asked this type of question. I'm going to try and work with them to see if they would sit down with one of the local CC's and maybe discuss this possibility. The crazy part is that this doesn't even have anything to do with me but I guess if I can get some positive results I might consider a degree path change. :D
