Does any one out there have any experience with distance learning through Spurgeon's College in London? I am interested in an MTh degree. They say that their degrees are validated by the University of Wales. Is that the same as being accredited? How flexible are they concerning residence?

I presently am enrolled in Spurgeon's MTh in Applie Theology. I am the first and only American student enrolled in any of the Spurgeon's MTh programs. Validation is similar to accreditation. More precisely, however, it means that the degree is actually conferred, or granted, by the University of Wales. So, you complete your studies through Spurgeon's, and the University of Wales grants the degree. This is the normal relationship between theological colleges and universities in the UK.

I would highly recommend the Spurgeon's programs, and would be glad to answer any additional questions.

As far as flexibility in the area of residency is concerned, I can't really say definitively. I've been to London three times for intensive course sessions. Another poster in this forum was given the impression that, in the MTh in Baptist and Anabaptist Studies, there might be some chance of him being freed from residency requirements. So, if that's the program that interests you, you might have a chance of completing the program entirely at a distance. As far as the MTh's in Applied Theology, Urban Mission, and Preaching are concerned, I can say with a pretty high degree of confidence that you'd be expected to travel to London for the three required residencies. In these programs, the residency periods play a pretty integral role in the course structure.

Rob, Spurgeon's website is quite comprehensive; I suggest that you contact Chris Voke, the admissions tutor, directly, using the e-mail address supplied at the website.

As CL has indicated, some programmes do require a residency in London of 4-6 weeks per year. The MTh in Baptist & Anabaptist Studies (via open learning) does not specify this at least on the website.

The South African system follows the British model in this regard, with Potchefstroom and Greenwich School of Theology having a similar relationship. All work is submitted to both GST & PUCHE, approved by both, with the degree being awarded by PUCHE. Other similar associations include:

    AFM Theological Seminary/Rand Afrikaans University

South African Theological Seminary/University of Zululand

I would do as Craig suggests and contact the appropriate faculty member. If your interest is in the MTh in Applied Theology, you would do well to contact Peter Stevenson directly. He will be glad to hear from you, and will prove quite helpful.

What Craig says about residency is true of the Spurgeon's PhD program. However, the MTh programs will only require 4-5 days in residence at the beginning of three consecutive semesters (approximately every six months). As for me, I travelled to London in September 1998, Jan/Feb 1999, and September 1999, staying for about a week each time. The residencies are thoroughly enriching experiences, and air travel and accomodation fees are quite reasonable. I would highly recommend the experience.
