Hi, A friend of mine who found out that I am taking classes via DL is also interested to further her career by getting a JD. She have BS in Accountancy. Is there any DL for JD - online or otherwise? Another question, will JD qualify to teach community college Business Law and/or Taxation? Thanks again for everyone's reply.
A friend of mine has a JD and taught real estate law at a CC (he also writes college text books on the subject). Check with your local CC though for acceptability.
Yes, the JD will most likely qualify one to business law and taxation in a California community colleges. I have noted instances where a CPA with a few years of practice was asked to teach business law.
at the community college where I teach (Indiana) we hire JDs to teach in the paralegal program. We also have a JD teaching a political science class called personal law.
Oh wow she'll be happy to hear she can. She is debating either MS in Taxation or go through the 4-yr minimum JD. She's a CPA and tired of accounting and want to teach College Taxation or Business Law. I tried to become a CPA and can't pass Audititing, and here's a CPA wanting to get out! What an irony! She has started looking for online JD, I don't know yet if she found one.
Confused... Yes, but are you asking if she can get a JD online? That's a whole nother story, as my granpa would say. Regarding teaching: I wouldn't advise that she get a degree JUST to teach online. The ROI (return on investment) just isn't there. As an income supplement, sure. Or to supplement income while building a solo practice. And taxation classes are not usually freshman-sophmore level. Do many community colleges even have classes in Business Law or taxation? Regardless, a JD holder would be eligible to teach business law at a four-year institution too. But to teach taxation I think one would need a CPA or accounting degree in addition.
Tell your friend to try teaching a few courses part-time before making a career change. She might land a full time job teaching in a community college with her CPA and a few years adjunct experience. That said, full time jobs in college teaching are scarce and it is very hard to make a living teaching adjunct courses. Has she thought about moving into private industry?
