I am in need of some advice here, I graduate from a Tier 2 school with a BS on Management Information Systems. Although I did graduate my grades were not that great. After my sophomore year, I had a death in my family that was really hard on me and they school credit me back a semester and it took me longer than recovery than expected. The end result was I got my act together and straight up, but my GPA suffered in the end.

Now that I have been out of school and working for Fortune 50 Global Company and have made quiet a good impression on the executive management team. They have suggest and hinted that I could go far with the company if I had my MBA degree and suggest that I should get it. Being that I have been out of school for 14 years going back is not exactly easy. I was looking distance learning, at the same time for something that does not require GMAT. I will say I am not a good test taker either. Any suggestion from a school that does not require GMAT. Hate the say it by I feel somewhat embarrassed with my poor undergrad grade and wanting to apply for a MBA degree. Any advice for me. :(

    Some points:

    1. Do not sweat your undergrad GPA. My undergrad GPA was 2.29 in Communications/Journalism. I had several poor semesters.

    2. I also did not do well on the GMAT - (I forget my score, but the scores weren't good).

    3. As you can see from my signature block, my MBA is from an AACSB accredited institution.

When I went back for the MBA, I had seven years of management experience, and I had an interview with the Dean. Do not downplay your experience - good schools want to see this!

To finish the story, I took 12 credits of Undergrad Business Courses first, then applied for admission to the MBA program at the University of Akron. I was admitted under probation, finished out the MBA foundation courses, came off probationary admissions, and then finished with a 3.71 GPA in the MBA, including my final semester when I completed 18 grad credits.

Go for the best school you can find and afford. I highly recommend starting your research at:

If you decide that you don't want to do the GMAT, here is a listing of Regional Accreditation Best Buys:

    Good luck!

My wife suffers from the same story, though she was asked to maybe do another degree see the post: http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?t=31607
From the post you can see we have been searching "Shopping around" and I can assure you that you can definitely find an MBA in UK that does not require GMAT. Under my opinion Leicester Uni for you case should be the best, but also consider Uni of Wales where the admission requirement are not so strict...another issue is always fees! Happy hunting....:)

I believe that Northeastern University does not require the GMAT as a requirement for entering their online MBA program.

    Best of luck!

  5. Big question - along with the company "hints" are they paying the freight for a program? If they're contributing, I'd look into the best program you (and your employer) can afford.

While admittedly I'm a good test taker, don't write off the GMAT - a program might require it but it's only a factor. Don't discount the program just because a GMAT won't be waived. Some only require a 450 which is below the mean score.

As far as your undergrad grade goes - it doesn't matter beyond applying to the school. Who ever asks for someone's undergrad GPA?

Thank you all for your encouraging words, just to answer a few things.

japhy4529 - I went to Northeastern for my undergrad, is it a good idea to go back to the same school for my MBA as my bachelor?

guitarmark2000 - Is that listed on the transcript?

Again, thank you all for the encouragement.

Do you think it will need to be AASCB? If not, that opens more DL options that don't require GMAT.

You may want to try Heriot Watt MBA which is distance learning and is Royal Chartered. I think that should be equal to regional accredition. I took two of the courses before. It is quite challenging especially distance learning. The MBA does not need GMAT. You basically need to buy the courses, take the exams and get your MBA.

Don’t worry about the past or the grade point average; move forward, you might look at brick and mortar school with an online program or an accelerated program in your local area. (Stay away from the big guys like PHOENIX, etc.
You might want to consider a MA in Organizational Management or similar, say away from the GMAT, if you do poorly it’s a major mind mess so don’t do it.
    Look at
    Baker College/MS- IS
Chardon States MS in Mgt. & Behavior
    Eastern University
Azusa Pacific (online) MA in Ed. Technology
From the UK – Univ. of Liverpool (online)
Argosy – MA in Mgt (Not a BM) but you will get the degree with no barriers
All six are achievable without major testing, study groups or noise work (busy non-value junk)
Stay away from Excelsior & Thomas Edison – too many road blocks (Feedback from a degree holder of both)

Remember to look at accelerated program in your local area – 1 night a week (great way to go)

  11. The GPA is typically either shown on the transcript, or the grades are, and someone can then do the math for the last 30 or 60 hours.
