I received yesterday in the mail a quality flyer advertising Mountain State College in Orlando, Florida. It was offereing a BS in Criminal Justice and a MS in CJ. They claim accreditation (but it did not state which one), however, when I tried to locate them doing a quick search I came up empty. Has anyone heard of this one before.

If it is a mill it has one very nice information flyer. Thanks for your assistance.

I found a Mountain State College in West Virginia, not Florida. You can find their website at:
    http://www.mountainstate.org/

Their website says they have been in existence since 1888. Maybe there were mountains in Florida back then, and when they flattened out the school shifted to West Virginia??

It appears they specialize in associates degress. Perhaps you can compare the flyer you received with the information on the web site.

They claim to have ACICS accreditation (Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools ). ACICS is an independent, national, institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

There's no listing of the schoool in the US News' listings. But Gus' excellent new webpage is on top of this.

The Mountain State he lists is Mountain State University, not college. It's located in West Virginia and offers a number of undergraduate distance programs at the bachelor's (and associate's) level in business and CJ. It claims to be regionally accredited, and I verified that it is in fact listed on North Central's website.

I'm guessing that this is the same Mountain State. It seems to be expanding rapidly and may be a local West Virginia community college that was recently upgraded into a new state university. That may explain the variations in websites if they added a ".edu" site when they stopped being a community college, but neglected to take their old site down.

But I'd want to talk to the school before enrolling in it, and verify this stuff first.

Upon reading their website a little more, I found that they are not a state university, but rather a private non-profit. Apparently West Virginia is the 'mountain state', and they are "Mountain State - University", not "Mountain - State University".

I believe they are two schools. Mountain State U is RA by NCA, while Mountain State Colege is ACICS accredited. Also, Mountain State College offers are more technician oriented (Admin Assisting, Medical Assisting, Travel and Tourism, etc) While MSU offers Bachelors degrees (didn't find graduate information).

You are correct, Bill. Mountain State University is the new name of the institution formerly known as the The College of West Virginia (which began as Beckley College in 1933) in Beckley, WV. Alumni have the opportunity to obtain a new diploma reflecting their alma mater’s new name.

Mountain State University does not offer any distance learning Master’s degrees, but they do offer residential Graduate Programs in Physician Assistant, Nursing, Strategic Leadership, Interdisciplinary Studies, Health Sciences and Criminal Justice.

Mountain State University offers power exams which I am currently checking out as a testing alternative for my husband. I found the admissions people the most helpful of any school where I have called with inquiries. No sales pitch. Good ideas. I do not work for this institution. Hille
