Nice post Tia, I've actually been considering something similar as I'm about to move to Houston and will be done with the MS about the time I establish residency. I know there are a lot of schools in the greater Houston area but I'd love to see DL options as well...

I've just switched careers from law enforcement to IT Project Management...weird huh? Anyhow I did it with an MBA in Organizational Leadership combined with very limited (13 months) of IT project management experience, some old IT certifications and a more than passing amount of knowledge about the PMBOK of which my interview used heavy PMBOK terminology.

Anyhow I feel like I could offer more so I'm now in a MS program for Management Information Systems with an emphasis in Project Management, but before too long I will be expected to certify as a PMP.

I say all that to say, everyone I work with almost has a PMP certification. 2/3 of them also have an MBA but the focus of their MBAs are all over the place. Most have some kind of undergrad degree in CIS but there are more than a couple who are liberal arts types too.

I think any MBA program combined with a PMI certification would probably work fine. In which case in North Texas you also have Amberton University (probably the deal of the century on MBA programs) and you can use the money you save to take specialized graduate certificate programs in whatever sector of IT you wish to work in. For example running projects in networking is nothing like running projects in software development. Also that PMP will be a weighty credential on par almost with your degree and in some instances, more required than the MBA will be.

Just a thought from a guy who recently made the transition himself...;)

Seems like you left one high stress job for another, but at least you won't have to worry about being shot at (hopefully!) :D

I know its not from Texas, but I am very happy with American Military University. I am working on my MBA in IT Project Management. Tuition is not too expensive at $275 per credit hour. I was able to transfer in 9 credits from previous graduate work.

Might be something to look at,

The stress is a different kind though, hard to explain but it's almost the kind you can just blow off, it's odd because there used to be a time when all I could ever talk about was work, it was the center of my life. Now? I hardly even think of work when I'm away from the office and certainly rarely talk about it.

Besides, I actually I'm kind of thriving on stuff being different every day (the world of IT). Routine gets so...routine. :D

wait till IT gets routine :) i have been in IT past 5 years now and the reason i want to pursue an MBA is to get out of this routine work. I am tired of being a developer and would like to move towards management further down the road. So having a MBA should help.

    thanks

thanks guys ....i atleast have some where to start with now...i am going to research these colleges suggested by people here & will post again ......

Yes IB is international Business, this interests me because of so much globalisation going around...should be a nice thing to work on in future....

FriendOrfoe i completely agree with the PMP certification being specialised for S/w Devlopment ....i have gone through the material & looks like what we use in Software Mangement in the Real world. I think MBA + PMP maybe a very good combination down the line....

I guess I'm lucky, I kind of skipped the technical stuff and jumped right into project management and analysis. The great thing for me is I track multiple project teams, all doing different things and in different phases of their various projects so one day to the next for me can be very different. But I know what you mean, every job has its burnout point. MBAs can be very diverse in the skills they demonstrate, everything from IT management to managing a Home Depot...I certainly don't regret my decision to get mine.

    accredations

is there any list of nationally accredited colleges ? i see that most of these private colleges are not well accredited...if i am putting in more than 10,000$ , it better be from some decent university/institue which will hold value ...

    Amberton??

Is there anyone here, who's done his MBA from Amberton. I would like to get sone feedback on this one. The site says its 675 per 3 credit hour...since a usual MBA is 36 credit hrs, am guessing an mba would amount to around 8,000$-10,000$.

    any feedback/comments folks?

    Thanks.

What exactly do you mean by nationally accredited? You mean by AACSB? DETC? PMI?

I did some research on the net & found that RA are the best bet. am i correct ?

I think that most people would agree with that statement.

Right, but when talking about MBAs some go one further and also argue for AACSB accreditation and when mentioning Project Management there are even some looking for PMI accreditation (PMI not nearly as often it seems), all on top of the RA.

oh, Amberton only has RA accreditation. what i like about it , its cheap & it also has a brick & motar campus!

Any other DL programs in the same price range with AACSB accreditation?

Yes. Jacksonville State University offers an online AACSB accredited MBA for just $324.00 per credit hour.
