    Howdy folks,

My first post, so if I violate any etiquette please forgive me.

I'm looking to do a master's degree with a focus on Carl Jung and post-Jungian thinkers. I'm not looking to be a therapist, more focusing on the cultural aspects of his thought. I know, pretty obscure. Essex offers an M.A. by research and they have a great department with a focus on Jung. Also Saybrook institute has a program with a Jung focus. Both quite pricey.

I'm looking at South Africa right now. Knowing the talent on this forum, I wonder if I've missed anything else? If not, any recommendations for a ZA university to approach to do this topic? Which department, given that I don't want to be a psychologist?

    Cheers,

    Roger

Hi Roger, welcome to the board.

You may have already seen this webpage about Mythological Studies. The guy who created it teaches at Pacifica and is a Jungian. It lists lots of programs in psychology and cognate subjects with a Jungian focus, but most of them don't look like they offer distance learning.

You need to be aware that several of the DL programs on his list aren't accredited (the Institute of Imaginal Studies for example) or are accredited by DETC (the University of Philosophical Research). So be aware of your own accreditation needs before you contemplate signing up with anything.

Pacifica's kind of cool. They are a whole (WASC-accredited) college that's kind of focused around depth psychology and mythological studies. Joseph Campbell was fond of it in its early years and lectured there from time to time. When he died he left his papers and 3,000 books to Pacifica.

As far as ZA programs go, I'm basically clueless and can't help you. It's an interesting idea and will watch to see what others come up with.

    Hi Roger,

Welcome! If you have a research proposal in mind (or if you can come up with one), then perhaps you could pursue a research M.S. in Psych via UNISA (University of South Africa). If you go this route, then I highly suggest that you contact IACI (the UNISA agent for U.S. and Canadian applicants). IACI will help you through the landmine that is the UNISA application process.

    Best of luck!

Thanks! I definitely appreciate the referrals. Pacifica would be the best, but cost is a major factor. I'm off to speak with IACI.
