Anyone familiar with TUIU, and if so can you guys give me your opinion on TUI University. I'm looking into their Masters programs in Health Science in Public Health or Emergency & Disaster Management. Also like them because of their cost. $250 per semester hour plus course materials included (books). I'm not too concerned about the name of a school, just as long as they are regionally accredited.
    Thanks in advance,

I completed my MS-ITM from TUI. They are good and the degree served me well. I did not like the fact that there were not books - I like books.

I took a few undergraduate business classes though it in 2003 and finished the environmental health science graduate certificate through them just a few weeks ago. Compared to other graduate work I have done, I found the courses to be easy - very short papers and a couple of forum posts every couple of weeks. I did not like the lack of books and ran into problems with weblinks on the CDs being inaccurate. I also felt like the participation on the forums was very poor - not enough interaction between the instructors and other students.

IMO, there are better TA friendly options available in both of the fields you are considering.

I agree with Randell in regards to books. I like books as well. I’m currently taking my second MBA class with TUI and I have been supplementing my classes with my own books (10 day MBA, portable MBA, etc). So far the classes have been pretty decent. Each class is made up of several modules with each module requiring posts on the discussion board, 1 case module paper, and one session long project paper. As long as you work at it a little each day it’s not too difficult to stay on top of your studies.

Funny that people are still fussing about the name... The name "TUI University" is fine.

I don't know anything specific about the College of Health Sciences, but in my opinion, all the masters degrees at TUI University are a good value for the money.

So you're telling us that you're taking graduate classes and there is no required textbook or mandatory book reading? No wonder a lot of people think distance learning is a joke!

This kind of practice is bad for DL institutions overall - it just give fuel to the critics.

Randell has answered this misunderstanding about the lack of textbooks but I wanted to elaborate...

Students are required to read multiple readings for each of the various topics in the course; instructors select journal articles from the online library and online materials posted by instructors from other universities. Oftentimes, materials that convey overlapping or conflicting discussions of theory / practice are presented to the student for distillation / analysis. If you are familiar with Bloom's Taxonomy, you will note that the TUI University student is always analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating:

On the other hand, with a printed textbook you're often getting the author(s) singular point of view that orients the student toward the "lower" functions of Bloom's Taxonomy. Hence, the lack of a formal textbook is actually an advantage and not a disadvantage.

These are a lot of good points. I have learned a lot from all the readings that are required from different sources. I would just like a book! I also have the 10 Day MBA and it is great.

    Hi~
A degree from TUIU does qualify for submission to OCS/OTS. I graduated from TUIU with a BS Degree in Business, and no issues applying to the Air Force OTS. I pulled my package in the end, but that was due to personal reasons and not my degree.

So, yes a degree from TUIU is a valid degree. I will also add that my degree from TUIU prepared me very well for graduate level work as well. I had no issues with my degree applying to Oklahoma State, Missouri State or Chadron State...but of course there's the GMAT thingy too.
