What would you say is the most in demand PhD that somebody could earn online?

I know of one that seems to be in demand and that is a PhD in Accounting.

From what I have seen, there appears to be a real interest for a Phd in History.

From a students perspective yes. What I mean when I say in demand is from an employers perspective. Which PhD do employers want and which one are they willing to pay for?

In the UK there was a high demand by industry for a practical engineering doctorate and the EngD was created and is now offered by many universities. The EngD has more coursework than the traditional UK Ph.D.

I would imagine that this will depend upon the industry of the employer. Employers in the financial industry are probably not going to be searching for people with PhDs in Education (except for possibly the training department).

To turn your question around, what PhD do you want the most and are willing to pay for? To pursue an academic doctorate for purely financial reasons, will likely make you a very miserable individual for the next 7 to 10 years. While I do not have direct experience in this area (yet), I would imagine that you really need to be passionate about your dissertation topic. The kind of passion that will get you up at 5:30am on Sundays to obsess over and work through it.

Interest and demand for a History PhD program, yes. Demand for PhD History graduates, not at all.

Yes, faculty with PhDs in accounting are extremely difficult to find. Nursing is another rare one. Marketing also appears to be fairly scarce. I get many resumes from faculty with PhDs in general business or business administration, organizational leadership, psychology and education.

I second this one, PhDs in accounting is in demand but mainly for teaching positions. As most accountants only need a CPA to work, it is not common that a CPA would go to the trouble of getting an accounting PhD or even a master's. A CPA averages close to 100K a year while an assistant professor with a PhD makes 60K to start, so you are looking for 6 years more of education for half the pay, interested?.

Ah, yes, but you forgot to factor in the consulting gigs that the PhD professors can get on the side. My cousin is an accounting professor and did his dissertation on something related to fraud. Over the past few years, he has had all sorts of very high billing side jobs in addition to his academic position. He is a CPA but his PhD lends even more credibility to his experience in the field.

Most states have a 150-hour rule; as one can complete a master's degree with 150 hours (120 for the bachelor's and 30 for the master's), to all intents and purposes, this would tend to mean that many, if not most, accountants have master's degrees.

The going rate for a new accounting Ph.D.-qualified assistant professor (from an AACSB-accredited school) is approximately 127K, not 60K.

Here is a link to 2005-2006 numbers: http://www.nysscpa.org/cpajournal/2007/307/images/ex3p66.pdf.

By the way, these are 9-month salaries. Teaching ONE summer course typically pays from 10 to 13 percent of base salary.

These numbers looked low to me - I presume these salaries are for ALL business disciplines?

I know that my school would have a near zero chance of hiring AQ accounting faculty for less than ~ 120K.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the only PhD in Accounting that I've found is from Capella, which of course is a far cry from AACSB accredited. So, what can a person with a PhD in Accounting from Capella expect? It seems that with that degree there will be plenty of online teaching positions but the traditional brick and morter positions seem out of reach. Am I correct? Are there any other schools with a PhD in Accounting that allow few residencies?

I agree, assuming that you have a PhD from a AACSB accredited school. However, most online PhDs in accounting are from non AACSB accredited schools. The 60K range is for schools that are likely to hire people from these schools such as Walden, Devry and Kaplan. These schools hire in the 60K range to start.

You can find work as an assistant professors at small colleges or private schools like Devry. Devry pays in the mid 60s for an assistant professor. You might want to try to do the Post doc bridge after the PhD at Capella and qualify for AACSB accredited schools.
