I am in a distance-learning course at an accredited college. I registered to sit for the final exam at a local college. The exam is an open-book and proctored exam. However, due to many administrative problems, the local college says that they were not informed of the open-book format. As a result, the local college refuses to let me sit for the open-book exam until the first college officially informs them although the first college says that they did inform the local college of the open-book format.

Due to the many errors with these two regionally accredited colleges, I have been denied for two weeks (out of a four-week period) to sit for the exam.

I will never take another distance-learning course. Time is running out for me and I'm stuck in the middle.

Sounds like you have one bad experience and are will to write the whole online program off as a problem. While I am certain it is annoying, can you obtain documentation from your school that states open-book tests are the model?

I've taken numerous distance education courses and have never taken a proctored exam of any kind. Maybe you should switch schools instead of giving up on distance learning.

Golden Gate University's Cyber Campus requires at least one proctored exam during the term.

Not only do I indicate on the exam instructions whether it is open/closed book/notes, but also in the opening paragraph of the exam itself, in case there is a bureaucratic screw up somewhere (which I have never had).

I also post a note at the class website as to what is allowed for the exam.

I agree that just change the institution and don't give up your education. If you need help with finding the institution that fit you, just ask DegreeInfo.Com Forum's members. Most of us have extensive experience in these areas.

As far as having problem with institution, I would say every single institution has problem. For example, I am attending SMU; I turned in my research paper in in October 2008. I did not receive it back until June 2009. Almost every single professors I took classes with, they have different grade scale.

During my four years of study at FHSU, I have had three or four courses which required a proctor and was able to use my supervisor at work without any problems.

To write off distance education as a whole because of it does not work in your favor. Obviously you came to this forum to vent - great - you did. Now start browsing through the threads on this forum and read the numerous success stories (some with hiccups like yours along the way) and stop being a drama queen.

I am a fan of distance learning and didn't make any bad experiences so far. There can be troubles and problems but I wouldn't give up just because one thing went wrong. Your issue seems to be a bureaucratic problem of your college. Don't give up, try another course and you'll see it will be better.
