As one might surmise from the title, I'm excited about this program! I'm in Mountain State University's M.S. Strategic Leadership program now, and there's been a lot of talk about this program being on its way, however - it's finally official:

    http://www.mountainstate.edu/news/announcement_20090505.aspx

While the website doesn't have any additional information yet, the good news is that it should be available soon. For what it's worth, I've had a great experience in their M.S. program so far.

This gives an alternative to the PhD program in Org Leadership and Regent, as I wasn't completely sold on the school or the cost!

    Thanks for the info!

I hope this is not one of those many hybrid programs (that require many co$tly on-campus components) masquerading as "online" programs.

    New Mountain State program

Spoke to MSU today and was advised that more info. will be out about the program the first or second week of Aug. I received both my B.S. and masters degrees from Mountain State and if they run it like they did those it will be a great program.

If you contact MSU at 1800-766-6067 and tell them you want to be put on the contact list for the new DEL program they will contact you when they have more info on the program.

    Hope that helps everyone out

I called and confirmed the information Kevin provided above; thanks!

They have posted some more information on their website at http://www.mountainstate.edu/programs/leadership/del-prerequisites.aspx

In short, to be admitted you must provide the normal documentation of a bachelors/masters from an RA institution, as well as a resume outlining 5+ years of professional experience in a leadership role.

Among the information listed, we find this:

"Mountain State's new Doctor of Executive Leadership is available in-seat at our main campus in Beckley, WV, beginning in October 2009. Members of this first cohort will attend classes one day per week. Beginning in February 2010, our first hybrid cohort will begin their studies. Each year of their program, learners in this cohort will attend a four day residency at one of our campuses or sites. At the completion of the residency, learners will continue their studies via online courses, pro-seminars, and action oriented research."

Apparently, I had the type of program incorrect - it is not a PhD program, but a Doctor of Executive Leadership; they differentiate this by saying:

"Traditionally a more academic degree, a Ph.D. is often used for teaching. The Doctor of Executive Leadership is a versatile, highly practical degree. While it may be used as a credential for teaching, it is also helpful for anyone working in business/industry, education, non-profit organizations, government, and military. Organizations need leaders who understand how to lead in our current global environment. You will be equipped to effectively understand and implement change, utilize resources effectively, encourage innovative solutions to problems, access networks and technology, and facilitate team building."

    Thanks Mike.

When you talked to these folks did you ask about tuition? If so, is it the graduate rate or are they going to establish a special rate for the DEL?

    Thanks,

Hi Kevin - I did not ask them about it as I assumed they would release it when they sent us the info. They have not updated their tuition page, either (unless they end up using the same rate as the OL/Strategic Leadership programs).

    Sorry; Stay tuned! :)

Hey guys! Just wanted to pass on a friendly update.

I received their information packet in the mail today. Tuition will be 650~/hour, and the program is prescribed at three years (plus any additional costs for dissertation continuance). It is in a cohort format, requiring 3 4-day residencies if you choose the online format of the program. These are done over a Friday-Monday to cause the least disruption possible.

The application requires a master's degree (in any field), the application fee, a 'discussion paper' of 6-10 pages, a resume, transcripts, and two confidential recommendations. You will alos have to complete an interview.

    Hope this helps!
