Harvard University's Extension just added 4 new degrees. This brings the total to 26. 19 in the Master of Liberal Arts area, and 7 in the professional category.

    NEW FOR FALL 2009

    Clinical psychology
Clinical psychology emphasizes research on psychopathology, empirically based assessment, and psychological intervention, and applies the knowledge gleaned from academic research directly to individuals in distress. This concentration includes a field placement course that has both a classroom and a lab-based or human-services-based component, requiring 150 hours in a Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences or Harvard Medical School lab or research facility, a social services agency, or a hospital setting. While graduates would not be eligible for psychology licensure in Massachusetts based on an ALM degree, the field placement experience is intended to enhance the likelihood of securing mid-level, in-field employment, as well as admission to further graduate study.

    International relations
This concentration studies relationships among the world’s governments, international political economy, international law, multinational corporations, non- and inter-governmental organizations, and global issues such as poverty, genocide, and the environment. Its approach is interdisciplinary. Because of the global issues now confronting us, this burgeoning field has become an important offshoot of the field of government.

    Legal studies
The study of law and justice has a rich humanistic tradition, and it is from this perspective that this concentration is derived. This interdisciplinary field introduces students to legal theory, history, and ethics. It examines the impact of legal issues on a variety of fields and institutions, from museum law to mental health law. How the law functions within diverse segments of society, how concepts of justice have evolved, and the rhetoric of legal discourse are other aspects of this field.

    Visual arts
This field is a retooling of the previously offered ALM concentrations in history of art and architecture and studio arts and film. This combined concentration offers students more courses—a number of which are available through Harvard Summer School—and a wider pool of instructors from which to choose. Students may select from art and architectural history (both ancient and modern), film studies, digital media, photography, and other aspects of visual culture for their research.

Hi Jen - This is a nice update. Thanks! I'm assuming that the residency requirements haven't changed.

I think it's great that they are broadening their degree base but why on earth would they phase out Certificates? I would think that many of us who want to experience the "Harvard way" would like to have something to hang on the wall for our efforts. They need to develop a full range of programs that include students like myself who have several degrees and don't necessarily need another.

I'm going to contact them to see about taking all of their Project Management courses just so that I can include something to the effect that I studied a singular topic at their school. Seems like a BIG step backwards to me! If I have more time I would consider a degree but those days are passing me by.

Their certificates were really not certificates in the traditional 12-18 credit meaning- They were nearly a full degree (32 credits) minus a thesis.

Thanks Cookderosa and Woho for taking a moment to comment on this thread. I'm having a look at the Stanford Cert. right now but I would like to get a piece of paper from Harvard while taking their PM courses.
