I'm considering applying to the UNISA MPH program.

I have read that dealing with the administration at UNISA is difficult and that an agent http://www.iaci-canada.com/ is helpful.

But there are no recent comments on this subject. Anyone have recent insights?

    Unisa degrees

Unisa programs are well done and worth the effort, not to mention being quite affordable compared to US/Canadian/UK schools.

A factor you must consider, however, is marketability of that degree if you plan to work in the US. As high quality as these qualifications are, they will never have the respect of a US/Canadian/UK degree.

You might consider University of London, who offers three degree programs that might suit your needs: Infectious Diseases; Clinical Trials; Epidemiology. These programs are all offered at a distance by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

Total cost of a London qualification, minus books, about $15000 USD.

U of London also offers a Masters in Public Health.

    Mph

Your point is an important one and well taken. However, I am considering the MPH to augment my skills in the voluntary sector so it is a bit difficult to justify spending even $15,000

I would love to go to London Trop Med --- it's just down Gower St from UCL, of which I am an alum. And it's right next to the University of London Union with cheap beer!

If I was going to spend money like that, however, and if I were looking for a job in North America, I would go to a CEPH accredited school. Many government agencies, including California, require a CEPH accredited degree. This is silly when one is talking about a school of the quality of London Trop Med but there you are.

I don't know what the cheapest distance a CEPH accredited MPH is. San Jose State is about $20,000 (in or out of state).

    John Hopkins is $66,000!

Understood. Money is always the great equalizer!

I went to the Unisa Health Studies web-page .... no doubt you alreay know this:

"The programmes offered by the Department of Health Studies are in line with the requirements of the HEQF which was inforced from 2009."

Since the program meets HEQF requirements, it is likely your best / most affordable option.

With the health / disease challenges present in Africa, the faculty is undoubtedly well qualified to teach the subject.

I have also learned that South Africans interact a great deal with Europeans, and are quite up-to-date on global matters.

    Best wishes with your program.

PS: Unisa can be very difficult to work with. Hopefully the Health Studies department is a bit more responsive than other departments. Don't be afraid to use the phone. A lot of [older] faculty are shy with e-mail.

Wanted to get an MPH degree but not quite affordable in uk or us. Considering Unisa but is now late for 2010. Can any one suggest cheap online/distance MPH apart from US or UK which are quite expensive please?
