Hey guys anybody can tell me what is the official position of EC regarding credits earned from DETC institutions? Penn Foster is offering bachelors degrees now and they offer upper level classes however they are not ACE approved yet. So I wonder if EC would take them for credit and most importantly.. as upper level credit Any experiences? Thank you!
EC does accept Penn Foster courses, and even courses like Intermediate Acct I and II are considered upper division credits. Now that EC accepts DETC, I don't think it matters if they are ACE approve now. I already have two courses completed at Penn Foster and they send the transcripts directly to EC and they get those recorded. Make sure you get with your academic advisor at EC and have your courses at Penn Foster added to the "My Course and Exam Approvals" screen. I have already received approval to get Inter. Acct I, II, and Cost Accounting considered upper division acct courses.
Thanks for the update. Many of us have been keeping a close eye on this issue. Here are some notes from 2006 regarding the EC policy which was brand new at the time. It appears many of the steps (and fees) have been eliminated, and some have reported just sending DETC transcripts over and having them accepted without the formal NA transfer process. I think once the first one or two NA evaluations were done, EC became more familiar with NA and thus the process has become more flexible. TESC has been accepting some NA credit as well. See below: Dear Abner, Thank you for your inquiry to Excelsior College. (See policy at the bottom first) You are generally correct in your understanding of the process. I would just add that the coursework must be degree level and there are some limitations when it comes to NLN and ABET degrees. As well, the nationally accredited institutions must be approved by the US Department of Education and hold either professional or national accreditation, as verified by CHEA. I hope this information is helpful to you. If you need further assistance, please contact us again or call our toll free number at 1-888-647-2388 ext. 2-7. Sincerely, Emily Glasser Admissions Counselor [email protected] Hello: Can you tell me if there was a new policy instituted effective 7/1/06 whereby a potential Excelsior student can follow the procedures listed below in regards to transfer of Nationally accredited Colleges/Universities? 1) Student must pay $200 appeals fee 2) Student must complete an "appeal" letter, which Excelsior will make available 3) Student must provide official NA transcripts 4) Student must provide NA school catalog with course descriptions for the year(s) attended 5) NA school must provide signed letter referencing 3 RA schools that have accepted its credits in the past 6) Package goes before a board for a decision. Would this procedure apply to the National Accreditor DETC? DETC is recognized by the U.S. DOE and CHEA. Please advise. ****************************************************************** The Director of DETC works closely with EC on transfer issues. Take it easy, Abner
I'm not sure when this new process started, but back on 12/30/2008 I sent a message to my academic advisor on 12/23/2008 to get FIN101 Financial Management accepted as one of my business requirements and they updated the "My Course and Exam Approvals" after I completed the course, I had Tom Hunt send the transcript directly to Excelsior instead of me, and my transcript was updated with two weeks.
EC will 30 credits towards a degree from DETC schools regardless of ACE review. I think I was one of the first to do this when the process was pretty cumbersome. Since then the process has become more streamlined, from what I understand.
Just 30 credits? so lets say I have 60 Penn Foster credits and 50 are ACE approved the others are not approved... They would take 50 as ACE and 10 as PFC? or just 30 all together? thanks
The course that are ACE reviewed will be accepted without limit and you can still have 30 more DETC credits transferred in.
For Those Who Have Taken Coursework at Excelsior... Are the classes reasonable? I had taken two classes at NorthCentral University...and I just found it way too time consuming. It was almost impossible to finish the class as it required a lot of reading and a lot of assignments. Just wondering how Excelsior is. Any feedback would be appreciated.
What about their acceptance of Non-DETC, NA credits (like ACICS)? Are those still a no-go with Excelsior?
It may be the rule of distance learning, because I'm studying with AJU and I've had the same experience. In fact I quit working midway through my first semester and that helped a whole bunch, I went from being way behind, got a semester extension, and caught up at the very end with excellent marks. The last 5 1/2 weeks I did nothing but stay home with the books all day. My new semester starts this week and I'm debating even going back to look for work, as the concentration of each seem to be too draining.
