when life turns upside down....

Well, I wanted to put in a little update. My life turned upside down on Mother's Day, my mom passed away from cancer. She was in my home through her passing, and while her diagnosis and death all happened inside of one month, we did make the most of our time with her.

This changes my schooling circumstances a lot. My mom, a 40 year retired nurse, was going to be my mentor through nursing and onto a CNM program. Since she just retired, she was also going to homeschool my kids + babysit so I could go to F2F classes 8 hours per day. Well....clearly that's not happening. So, I'm back to only online options again...it's back to HES. The truth is, I loved my class, I love Harvard, and I love distance ed. I couldn't wait for summer school. I was a little nervous about changing careers - and a lot nervous about walking away from a job after 17 years! Deciding to stop the HES program was a return-on-investment issue for me mainly, and nursing made more sense. Now, everything has changed.

Condolences and best wishes to you and your family.

My dad was diagnosed with bile duct cancer last month so I'm beginning to get a taste of the roller coaster you experience with that type of thing. I've put any studies on hold.

Good luck in your studies, maybe there's another way to pursue a career change.

I'm sorry for your loss. My Mom has been gone for almost 10 years now. I'm glad your last days with your mother were good ones.

Sad news, my condolences to you. Take a little break and grieve, remember the good times and do not make any major decisions right now.

    Take care Jen,

    Cory

Right. There are few things more important than education. Family is one of them. Take your time, you'll have plenty of time later.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your condolences- really I do.

I'm not putting schooling before family....just sharing "this part" of my life with the forum, the part that includes my education.

My condolances to you Jennifer and your whole family. I'm sure your kids will miss her greatly.

I just got back from my coworker/friend's mother's funeral today. She died just a few hours before your mother.

Best of luck at HES and I'll look forward to hearing progress reports.

    Jennifer,

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss....I lost my father to that horrible disease just a couple of years ago.

It may sound cliched, but everything happens for a reason. My father strongly encouraged me to do what I shared with you in a PM, and that's been my inspiration.

Possibly another cliche, but 100% serious....anything I can do to help, please let me know. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and I am still alive and kicking. One operation and six months of chemo rocked my boat. It certainly stopped my Doctorate in its tracks.

It was a long way back. Chemo is not friendly and there are massive side effects, but you get over it. There is of course no such thing as a Dr saying, "well you are alright now". Every three months you revisit the Oncologist for checking. You live with the uncertainty of life. Interestingly, I now know that I won't live forever (none of us will) and that I need to live my life fully in the now.

My experience lets me know what you must be going through. I know the impact on the family first hand. My thoughts go out to you. I sat for six months with terminally ill people while having chemo and I saw extraordinary courage at close range. They helped me with my fear. I also saw their selflessness in giving to others.

I'm sure that your mother was no different. My condolences to you and your family.

My sympathies go out to you and your family. I can completely relate to how life can turn everything inside out in the blink of an eye. My wife of 9 years just left me 3 weeks ago...no indication, no clues. Everythng was wonderful and then...boom. My son, now 7, is leaving with her. Aside from the complete turmoil and grief I am going through, the financial impact is enormous. I'm struggling to complete my last few classe at Bellevue, which is more than a challenge right now. I had planned to start grad school later this year, but now there is simply no cash to do it. All of my future plans and hopes are gone, both professional and personal.
