With all this talk about DETC to RA I was wondering if TRACS has many of the same concerns or are RA's more open to accepting a TRACS degree.

    thanks

    Hi Robert,
Some of the problems that plague DETC also plague TRACS. It depends on the school. A lot of the Schools of Religion are ATS accredited and are rather reticent to accept TRACS courses. An exception is Liberty, who is RA accredited and also TRACS accredited. So they may be an option.

Historical comment: Liberty was accredited by TRACS around the time that the school was on probationary status with SACS due to discrepancies in the administration of its external programs (thhen known as the LUSLL program). I have often speculated that Liberty was "hedging its bets" in case they lost SACS accreditation, but their probation was lifted retroactively after they made sufficient changes in LUSLL.

It is notable, at this point, that after J. Gordon Henry retired as the head honcho of TRACS, the management of TRACS was taken over by two ex-Liberty guys.

    Mr. Levicoff:

According to Liberty's web page they are still accredited by TRACS.

  5. Yowch. "Mr. Levicoff" never said otherwise. Only that Liberty likely obtained TRACS accreditation as a hedge. Steve is an expert on TRACS, having published the book "When the TRACS Stop Short: An Evaluation and Critique of the Transnational Association of Christian Schools."

Since both accreditors hold the same recognition (USDE and CHEA), I'd say they're probably more-or-less equally acceptable; the thing to bear in mind is that TRACS is an evangelical Christian accreditor that accredits both traditional and nontraditional schools, while the DETC is a secular accreditor that only accredits nontraditional schools.

I second this. Folks should pay close attention to Steve when it comes to TRACS's history--he's the only one among us who has done any specialized research in this area.

Maybe I misread the post, but when I see "historical fact" and the word "was" I assume that was means "WAS" not "IS!" So, if I have misread what was said I apologize, however, I still maintain that the reading indicates that Liberty is not now accredited by TRACS.

But ironically the TRACS didn't stop short. TRACS tracks were laid all the way to the USDoE/CHEA, and both have recognized the agency as a legitimate accreditor. While TRACS does not currently enjoy the level of acceptance of RA or ATS, it is by no means worthless.

    Steve,
I'm curious concerning your opinion of TRACS since they've been approved by CHEA. Has it changed at all?
