    Hello,

When I set off to obtain an MBA my dream was an MBA in Economics. Since my school does not offer this concentration, I decided to go for the general MBA and then choose 3 graduate Economics courses as my electives. In my resume what I intend to put is MBA Economics… would the academia have a problem with this, with the fact that this specialization was self-conferred ?

  2. If you're wondering how to represent it on a resume, I personally would recommend something like "MBA (Economics focus)" rather than "specialization", if your program doesn't offer that concentration.

If you put something like that on your resume, and a prospective employer decides to check your school out and discovers that they don't offer an MBA in Economics, then your resume is going straight to long-term storage in the circular file.

You don't have the authority to confer a specialization on your degree, and that's not really what you'd be doing on your resume anyway. You would be representing to others that your school conferred a specialization on you that you didn't really earn. In most places, this is called lying, and it is frowned upon. If you feel like it's important that a prospective employer knows you took three economics electives, then create a section on your resume called "Relevant Coursework" and list those courses. But don't hold yourself out as something you aren't, because it's just too damn easy to be found out these days.

    Best of luck!

I agree, you cannot put an emphasis that wasn't there or offered. You can however place verbiage towards your 9 credit hour focus on Economics like Guitarmark suggested just be sure you do not try to misrepresent it.
