Still confused about credits/transcripts

Okay, I've read threads on this topic, but I think I'm still mixed up. lol

My son should be completing his undergrad degree requirements the end of Oct. when he takes 2 express classes in the fall. (I'm waiting for confirmation on his courses from TESC).

I'm confused about the 'extra' credits he's accumulated. Naturally, they show up on his unofficial eval with TESC.

What I'm not sure about is whether or not to send TESC a transcript with 4 credits from a university. They may or may not apply to his degree plan and he doesn't need them per se. He already has his electives (which they would probably come in as). The four credits are for a course related to ministerial certification. Does it make a difference one way or another? I doubt very much if he will ever go on for a grad degree but...

    Thanks!

The 'Other' category of credit hours on the TESC evaluation mean those credit hours are not applicable to the degree or are duplicated by other courses. There is no upper limit on the number of credit hours that can appear on the TESC transcript and you can add additional credit hours after graduation if your enrollment period is still active. While it is unlikely anyone will want to see my transcript I had a few credit hours in the 'Other' category. If I attend graduate school the transcripts from the original schools have to be sent anyway therefore what appears on the TESC transcript is irrelevant at that point. Oh, the TESC transcript is merely a listing of courses and credit hours without grades unless taken through TESC; the degree evaluation looks much better than the transcript in my opinion.

So then...if he needs to show someone a transcript, should he have copies of his degree evaluation? ;-) He has a 3.9+.

I made a doc with a list of colleges, dates attended, websites, student ID numbers, etc. in case he ever needs to contact any of them in the future. There's five including TESC. :(

Also, if he decided he ever wanted to go on, can he use the credits listed under "Other" to meet degree requirements. They probably wouldn't anyway, but I was just curious.

If the credits won't apply to his degree, then it's probably fine to leave things alone. If and when he decides to go to grad school, the school he's applying to will insist on official transcripts from all schools attended - they won't just take TESC's word on it.

    Best of luck!

And since TESC no longer puts a GPA on their transcripts except for courses taken through TESC any graduate school applicant still needs to send transcripts from each school attended where the credit hours were actually earned.

By the way, "a mom", the academic evaluation document is only meant to indicate how credit hours have been applied to your degree and will not be available after graduation. The transcript, on the other hand, will only list the courses and credit hours without grades and is the document you receive when requesting a transcript. It is too bad TESC does not use a format similar to the academic evaluation for the transcript because it looks much better IMHO.

Borth my grad schools took my Excelsior transcripts and did not request details from all the various schools I attended. The Excelsior transcript does show grades awarded by all the schools.

Unfortunately, no. The degree evaluation is closer to an unofficial transcript (student-issued copy) than a document an employer or school would accept as for education verification and/or credit transfer and/or admission to graduate school.

    Excellent idea!

As long as those credit hours were not earned at Thomas Edison State College the answer is yes but you would need to send the original transcripts from the schools where the credit hours were earned so it makes little difference if those extra credit hours appear on the TESC transcript.

Thanks everyone for the input. Since it doesn't sound like it will be detrimental, I'm going to have the courses he's taking from a Christian University sent to TESC. It won't meet any degree requirements or electives and will come in under electives, but it might be beneficial to have at least one transcript that shows ALL of his classes. Speaking of which, there's 6 colleges not 5. I guess I was having problems counting on my fingers. =P
