Foreign credential eval

Is it normal for a degree eval service to ask that a degree be translated from a foreign language into English? In other words, this lady from Colombia has a JD degree from a well regarded Uni. She went to a local JC and the counselor gave her a degree eval form, but she states she was told she needed to have the degree translated before submission for evaluation. Shouldn't the degree eval service do the translation? She ran off before I could suggest the eval from AACRAO, but I assume the service she was going to use was legit since a college counselor gave it to her.

    What do you all think?

I've never had to do this so I can't speak from experience but I'd would guess that a company that did evaluations of foreign credentials would be accustomed to having to deal with foreign languages. I would also think they'd rather be in charge of the translation rather than depend on the accuracy of someone elses translation for their evaluation.

That's pretty common. Both AACRAO and WES ask for a translation of the degree and transcripts when you submit them.

I had to translate mine (in a "Education USA" office in my city in Brazil) for the WES evaluation before applying to my Master degree in the Academy of Art.

I'm a little surprised but it's good to know that it's standard procedure.

Often the foreign school that issues the degree/transcripts will also provide a translated copy into English if requested. At least this was the case with Japanese universities I have dealt with. Your friend might want to contact her school and ask about this.

This is standard procedure. My Masters degree is from Spain, and I submitted these transcripts to WES and just received their official evaluation. This is a costly procedure, one that may deter me from any further international degrees since I want to continue teaching, and every potential job wants an official report from WES. After the initial application, each official report costs from $25.00 - $45.00. I think someone said it before, sometimes the issuing university can issue transcripts in English. My program did.
