    Hi everyone.

Can anyone share their experience of either Walden or Capella accepting their graduate level credits? How many credit hours?

I am considering going for the PhD or DBA (specifically in Project Management). I am almost done with a MBA and a Masters in Information Technologies Management from Webster University (RA). I have heard the canned response that these two institutions will accept anywhere from 9 to 12 credit hours. I am curious if anyone had different results.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I can say that Walden describes transfer credits on its website somewhere. I can't recall where though. I can tell you that for masters degrees they accept 9 credits. I was only able to transfer 3 credits because none of the other courses I took really went with the program I did.

PHD programs are a bit different depending on if it has KAMs or not. I believe they will only let you transfer in credits that are NOT part of a KAM.

If I read between the lines, it looks like you are asking how many of your MS credits will Capella (or Walden) accept as transfer into a PhD program.

If that captures the questions, then the answer for Capella is that they will take all of your MS credits in transfer. Probably Walden as well as this is the most common model for most universities in the US.

But you have to understand that a PhD program, entered into after a Bachelors program, basically includes the equivalent of an MS as a part of the larger doctoral program. If you already have the MS, then most universities accept that and let you start right in with the doctoral credits.

Capella doctoral program without an MS : 120 credits
Capella doc program with MS already: 72 credits

I do want to have my Masters credits deducted from the number of credits required to complete the DBA or PhD. I do realize that the courses must be relevant (same course for same course from a RA institution, etc...).

In my conversations with these two institutions, I was led to believe that everybody is only allowed to transfer 9 or 12 graduate hours, regardless of what they had completed. I want credit for the Master courses I have completed. I think that is fair.

Does this mean you were able to have your Masters credits deducted from your required total at Capella PaulC? Thanks for the input.

If you enroll in a Masters program you could only transfer in approx 9 graduate credits. If you are enrolling in a doctoral program you will be able to transfer in all of your MS credits for the reason I explained above.

The following is taken from the Capella web site:

    "Total Program: 120 quarter credits
Up to 48 quarter credits may be transferred into this program"
