I've been looking over the web for interesting (and affordable) graduate courses in history. I'm looking to complete 18 hours so I can teach DC courses at my local high school and possibly at the local CC. I want to see what kind of interesting courses are out there. I will start it off...

Western New Mexico University - Railroad History: Case Study - Summer 09 - tuition $490.00 4 books necessary, estimated cost $60.00.

I think AMU/APUS is king of the interesting history courses. If I end up there for my MA, I will have a field day taking courses. I'd end up with a 60 credit masters degree. :)

Here are some that sound really interesting to me:

    DM560 History of Transportation
    HS586 History of Science
    HIST587 Global History of Piracy
CW524 Civil War Cavalry: Theory, Practice and Operations
    MILS550 History of Sea Power
MILS650 U.S. Coast Guard Operations During Wartime (History of)
    MILS651 Undersea Warfare (History of)

Plus all the courses on WWII, ancient history, various cultures, etc.

I wish they offered an interdisciplinary degree with no required courses, only 12 courses of whatever you wanted. I would definitely get a degree from them if they offered that as an option.

History of Religion looks really interest too! I chatted with the professor about it a while back. I want to take it, but I'm waiting for a section to open up at a time when I can actually take it and put effort into it.

Just a thought for you Ruble... the Harvard extension courses are 4 credits each, which could speed up your process of obtaining the 18 hours. I considered it, but I figured I'd just stick with WNMU and APU. Good luck with everything. Looks like you're in the same boat I am.

Outside the norm may have been a better way to put it. Railroads, Piracy, are good examples lol.

Speaking of which, didn't Excelsior's MALS program once offer a course on the history of piracy?

Crossville is a very small, predominately rural, town in TN. When it was announced they were moving here it was a huge shock to say the least.

I can speak for the University of West Alabama's graduate history courses. I completed my master's degress there and earned 18 hours of grad history. I curently teach dual enrollment at my high school, adjunct at the local community college, and teach online for UoP. The courses at UWA have served me well.
