Website is interesting, but not very helpful.

Does anyone know what they do (or have experience with them -- correspondence from them)? Do they offer programs? Do they consult and refer?

Your comments and insights would be helpful.

La Universidad Oberta de Cataluña is a Spanish accredited university. The accrediting body is, as in the rest of Europe, the Ministry of Education. The degree is valid in the European Union, and due to the Hague Convention it can be extended to the rest of the civilized world.

The offer is large: three-year degrees, five-year degrees, master's, and even PhD. It is cheaper than American State Universities but expensive for European standards.
One turnoff: the classes are held, as far as I know, solely in Spanish or Catalan but they might have a program in English.

    Dear JLV -

Thanks for the info. Did you get it from the website or do you have connections there? I haven't received any responses to my inquiries -- probably because of the holiday break.

I did my research training at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (in english), but they don't have a completion program except in catalan.

Any advice or insights will be welcomed.

PS - Thanks to the administrator for such a prompt response on my "how to reply" inquiry! The icon was so obvious I looked right through it!

    Dear rknotek

    You are welcome!

No, I am not associated in any way with the Universidat Oberta de Catalunya or any other. As far as I know, they are a public institution, heavily subsidized by the local catalan government. Definitely, they are not for profit and neither am I. I am just interested in distance education to further mine and my wife's. In fact I will probably join the Quality Assurance program at CSUDH, and she will try Birbeck College in London. As you can see, nothing to do with the Spanish public university system

In any case, This university offers a PhD (multidisplinary) program that may interest you. They require that you speak Spanish or Catalan to an acceptable level (whatever that means), but many courses are held in English. The price for the entire program (about four years is circa $ 7000). Of course it is accredited by both the Spanish Ministry of Education and the European Union. BTW, I am almost sure that they will acccept all your previous work at Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, another fine, traditional institution. Here you can find details about their PhD program

If your Spanish skills are good, you may want to visit the Spanish Distance University. They ofer PhD degrees in many fields from engineering to filology or economics. The price is about $700 for full-time annual registration. For more info:
