Has anyone heard of a Master's in Strategic Leadership? I am looking at enrolling in a masters program and this one came across. Would it be worth anything or is it just something for schools to make money from people who don't want the rigors of an MBA? I don't want a worthless degree, but this one seemed to have alot of different aspects to it and looked very interesting. It is from Austin Peay State University.

The degree you are referring to is part of the RODP network and involves 5 other universities across the state of TN. The other schools involved in the program are:

East Tennessee State U. (ETSU) Ms. Amy Johnson [email protected] 423-439-4223

Middle Tennessee State U. (MTSU) Dr. Dianna Zeh Rust [email protected] 615-898-2068 615-898-5611

Tennessee State U. (TSU) Ms. Sarah Winter [email protected] 615-963-7373
    615-963-7248

Tennessee Technological U. (TTU) Ms. Jane Sipes [email protected] 931-372-6098

The University of Memphis (UM) Ms. Barbara Belzer [email protected] 901-678-2197

RODP MPS Coordinator Dr. Carol Helton [email protected] 1-888-223-0023

In my opinion a degree such as this might separate you from the MBA pack. The only drawback is the cost of going through the RODP program itself. It is substantially higher than a on campus or even online program through any of the schools listed.

You may also be interested in the MSSL program from Mountain State University (http://www.mountainstate.edu/majors/whystudy/sl/).

I'm enrolled in this program now (about 1/2 way through). It's been very good thus far. I have a liberal arts undergrad (Communication) and work in a technical field in a corporate environment, but have enjoyed it. It's relatively affordable, the format is good, and it's comfortably paced for busy individuals.

The school is no Harvard for sure, but for someone who wants to better understand the concepts presented (or who will continue on to more technical education or experience later), I think it's a worthwhile investment.

That said, I have put it on my resume for a few positions I've interviewed for, to be asked in all situations what I believed the importance of such a degree is to the given position. They never asked about the institution in particular.

    Hope that helps.

Are these schools offering on-line programs, or are they B&M ?

B&M offering online. The state of Tennessee has created a network of schools that offer the same degrees, this is outside of their regular online offerings.

I should have mentioned that my employer will pay my way if I go to Austin Peay State University. They don't have much in the way of Masters online. They do have some type of psychology degree online, but that does not interest me at all. I don't have to do it online, but it seems like it might be less time consuming than going to class. I have just never heard of "Strategic Leadership" and wonder what it is comparable to. It seems like a business degree of some kind. Thanks everyone.

I would encourage you to look through the applicable coursework for the program.

The SL degree I'm pursuing is not necessarily a business degree; I'd equate it closer to an organizational psychology degree as it's grounded in the more liberal side of things. I'm taking courses in organizational theory, human resources, leadership theories (classic & contemporary), etc.

I certainly don't get the impression that the greater business world understands what the degree means or covers.

They have one of the few Masters in Military History in the country. Sam Houston, Norwich, and AMU being the others.

Here is a good blurb about Strategic Leadership:

    http://www.cmoe.com/strategic-leadership.htm

I would also send a PM to David Lady for more information - he is one of the board's gurus on strategic leadership. FWIW - this degree combined with your work experience would be an asset for your career - too many companies think short term.

Your employer is going to pay for the degree? OK then, why wouldn't you?

Interesting - - about $17k for the MBA with a leadership focus. Does anyone have other links towards MBAs with a focus on leadership? Strategic leadership preferred, though I would consider Organizational leadership as well...

I'm just trying to figure out what to do once I've completed my undergrad, and am leaning towards an MBA that will provide me with an advantage over "any ol' graduate degree"... I'm not at all decided which graduate degree I want to pursue as my interest pull me into different areas (specifically law and leadership), or a Master of Laws before going for LLB (given that the LLM would be done faster than LLB and should also help my career aspirations)...

    Thoughts?

How about FHSU's MBA in Leadership?

I see you are currently at FHSU. If you like their style, they also have an entirely on-line MBA in Leadership.

    http://www.fhsu.edu/mba/online.php

They are $400 per graduate hour and are currently in the review process for AACSB accredidation.

Thought about FHSU, but I'll have to look up the thread on pros / cons of obtaining a Masters from the same university as ones undergrad...
    Thanks :)

That program looks exceptionally good for someone who has money and time to burn. Getting a degree in leadership would be informative and breathtaking.
