Hello, I am curious if anyone has been able to take college credit from the services being an child of a previous member. My dad was in the army and navy and I wanted to explore the possibility of taking courses offered to service members. Thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks. Hille

I'm not aware of anything like that, but depending on your state you may want to see if your father ever got a disability rating, even if it was only 0%. In Indiana, children of disabled veterans (defined as war vets with a 0% or greater disability rating) are entitled to up to 124 hours of free tuition (undergrad or grad) at any state school, so long as the veteran was a resident of Indiana for any 36 consecutive months during his or her lifetime.

This is a benefit from the state Department of Veterans Affairs and not a federal benefit, but it is definitely worth seeing what your state offers.

    Hille,

I was in the Air Force for six years. To my knowledge, the only way you can take military training courses is to be in the military or a DoD civilian (working for a service in a similar career field, or as a teacher in training). These training courses are designed to apply to certain military career fields and specialties. The atmosphere isn't that of a traditional college or university.

You could always join the military for the credits. It's not too bad if you chose the right career. For your commiment you get job experience, college credit for training, $4500 tuition assistance per year, free CLEP and DANTES testing, and the GI Bill. I have 97 credits and an A.A.S. degree from the Community College of the Air Force, which helped me complete my B.S. faster (and free thanks to TA) before I got out. Just a thought.

    Hope that helps.
