Interested in pursuing a BA in History. Have looked a few schools, and I am interested in American Military University, Thomas Edison State College, and Columbia College of Missouri.

Any one currently enrolled in these programs? I am active duty military and I want to change my major from technical to liberal arts. My only concern is that I will lose many credits based on the nature of my program. I have an AAS in Electronics from the AF. Can technical/MOS credit be used to satisfy free electives at the schools I mentioned? Any advice would be appreciated.

I am looking for courses that are 8 week in duration, not the traditional 12-16 week term. Thanks.

    Yes.

While it is entirely up to the school you ultimately decide to go through, your technical credits through CCAF are regionally accredited and should transfer over to fill the lower level general electives with little difficulty.

All three schools you mentioned are part of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Consortium.

What do you want to do with a degree in history?

I plan to finish a graduate degree before I retire from the military. After retirement, I plan to teach high school history.

  5. I just recently graduated from Thomas Edison State College (TESC). Overall, I think the TESC would be the best bet between the three that you have listed. Each have pros and cons, but if you are decent at CLEP's/DANTES then TESC would be the fastest route since you plan on going for a master's degree.

I see you have a CCAF degree as well. Did the CCAF technical credit fill the 30 or so hours required for free electives? Can you tell me the best way to approach? When did you enroll at TESC, and did you take many classes with them, or did you CLEP?

    Just a thought:
The TESC BA in History has 27 units of free electives so some of your current credits may be unused.
Look at Excelsior; their BS in Liberal Studies with a major in history has 60 units of free electives.

As for classes you can take them at any RA college/university, take Excelsior courses, or take exams such as CLEP or DSST.
Excelsior has a lot of students fromthe military services.
I had no trouble getting into graduate programs with my BSLS from Excelsior.

From your name I assume you work with C-17 aircraft.

  8. I do agree with Anderson. Excelsior would probably be the best between TESC and Excelsior since you have a lot of "elective" credits and will be moving on towards a master's anyway. The 27 elective credit were filled up by my CCAF technical credits. I enrolled at TESC a little more than a year ago, but could have completed my degree at a MUCH faster pace...it all depends on the person. I did take classes through them but a large portion of my credits came from CLEP'S/DANTES. There are a lot of history exams so I decided to take advantage of them, and the fact that they are free did hurt either. lol

I didn't notice your screen name at first. I guess it's a small world cause I am a loadmaster on C-17's.
