Does anyone have any experience with either of these distance law schools:

Taft Law School (part of Howard Taft University)

Northwestern California University School of Law

I'd be interested in knowing what the method of instruction is. Also, can you start a course at any time or do you have to follow a schedule set by the school?

And of course, do you think you got your money's worth?

(I notice Taft costs approximately twice as NWCU.)

    Thanks for any replies!

I can only respond to NWCU as I'm a recent alumnus. If you do the bar program you must study 864 hours within an eleven month time period which works out to about 2.5 hrs. per day. There are weekly chats based on the subject/s you are studying whether you're a 1st year student (1L), 2nd, 3rd or 4th. After the first year you take the baby bar in June or November and as long as you pass it any studies you have done count towards your four years.
The routine work you do are legal definitions and vocabulary (subject based), use the definitions in a hypothetical situation, brief cases, study your casebook and ancillary materials, take your mid terms (open book) and take your final exams (all essay and proctored).

The reason Taft is charging double is they are NA. However, since they are an online law school they are not accredited by the ABA. Both schools are registered with the bar and will qualify you to take the California bar. Overall I had a good experience with NWCU and learned a lot. One caveat, you must really want to be a California lawyer and study law with a passion.:D

    Hi sideman,

Do you know if NWCU still offers non-bar JD?

    According to their website, no:

    13) Question:

Does Northwestern California University have a Non-Bar JD program?

    Answer:

No. Northwestern California University does not offer a Non-Bar Juris Doctor (J.D.) program.
