Currently, I'm applying to Argosy University/Sarasota's EdD program in counseling psychology. Is there anyone out there that has attended this program and can tell me more about it? I'm also wondering how it stands compared to the other accredited distance learning programs? Also, do you know if any of Argosy's graduates have gone on to obtain university teaching positions? Any information would be helpful. Thanks,
    David

You will be better received in the teaching community with a PhD rather than the EdD.

Don't quite understand. Why do you think PhD's are better received in the teaching community? What's the difference? Thanks for your input.

The Ph.D is perceived as the gold standard within the world of academia due to the higher level of research orientation and emphasis that generally is required to obtain this credential. The Ed.D is not as demanding in terms of the dissertation process and is generally perceived more as a practititoners degree than one that is research oriented.

Argosy's Counseling Psych Ed.D appears to be a well designed program. However, if the primary goal is to use it as a teaching credential, Howard is correct in suggesting that the Ph.D would provide more viability and value. It is also importatnt to note that unless one is currently in a teaching position within a university setting, employment prospects for individuals with doctorates from distance learning institutions are extremely difficult to obtain. Even individuals from Ivy League schools are finding very heavy competition in landing a teaching position with tenure.

I'm mainly concerned about advancing my career as a practitioner, ie., private practice. However, I'm concerned that, perhaps, I haven't chosen the best school or program. Any suggestions regarding the other accredited DL schools? Also, where do you think Argosy ranks among these schools?

    Thanks,
    David
