Harrison Middleton University

IS there anyone actually attending Harrison Middleton University?

I am really looking for information on the DA program.

 

If I recall correctly, Tireman and Dave Lady were working on their Harrison Middleton docs. It looks like an interesting program.

 

I am planning on one day going after their DA myself. It looks like a great program, even if grads would have fairly limited utility with the credential.

 

I was but dropped out after putting my program together so I could focus on finishing my NCU DBA. I've been exchanging a lot of emails with Tireman, and he is the real expert on them right now. I don't plan on going back given where I and they are...

The best thing about them was their prior Dean, Chad Redwing. He left maybe a year ago? A lot has changed...

 

I agree with Dave. I am done too. I will say this, they have been quite generous to me in my leaving ( You can PM for more on that). I miss Chad, but Deborah Deacon ( the new graduate dean) is good too. It just did not mesh with what I was doing and what I needed.

 

Can either of you give us some insight as to how a class works at HMU? I am somewhat confused about the format.

From reading the catalog it seems that the student and tutor develop the class and assignments together.

Can you give some insight into how it works from the student's perspective?

In the DA program, when I was in it, and I think I was either the first or second person to sign up, the first class was already put together, and one of the main things you did was put the rest of the program together. Mike has more recent info, I think now you only get to put together around 30 of the 60 credits.

Different from most other online schools, the main focus is on phone conversations with instructors instead of a lot of paper, however paper and other assignments were still part of it.

 

Students in the program complete one course at a time and are considered to be full time students. Ed.D. courses are four credits and students have a maximum of 16 weeks to complete each course. For a four credit course, a student will have four telephone discussions with a tutor (faculty member) where they will discuss the readings done for that discussion. At the end of each course, a student submits a 7-9 page paper summarizing the readings and discussions.
In the Ed.D. program there are 9 required courses and 3 electives, which are student designed. These are followed by the legal research course and applied project. Because students decide what to talk about for each discussion for each course, based on the aspects of the readings they found interesting, troubling, or puzzling, each student’s program differs and there are no “canned” syllabi.

 

This school is not RA correct?

 

Correct, it is accredited by DETC (NA). But a cool program nonetheless.

Well, they are in NCA territory.

 

I was told (as of February 2009) that this will NOT happen. They told me they are happy with being NA. They wanted to be known as a national university, not regional. Their words, not mine. You could call them and get an update as to why they wont go after RA.

 

One of the inexplicable paradoxes is that despite its doctoral degrees, 'US News' won't be likely to include Harrison Middleton in its 'national university' category unless it's regionally accredited.

 

Pardon my ignorance. What is NCA?

 

One of the six regional accrediting bodies. The North Central Association (NCA) is considered by some to be more tolerant of distance learning programs.

I have been accepted into Harrison Middleton's D.A. program and have just finished outlining my coursework, focusing on art and language. It's going to be gratifying to get some real value out of Great Books of the Western World (the required text). Enjoying it immensely. Feel free to post questions or send IM.
