Anyone who can provide me information regrading an online Masters degree (by research). This means, we only have to write and defend a thesis (based upon a research) and nothing more. UNISA has one programme , but i am looking forward to some better options.

Most master's degrees in the UK are research-based rather than coursework-based. What field are you looking to do your master's in?

Ted, i am looking for Electronic / Communication Engineering , also online with less expense. UK would be very expensive, i think so. What you advice ?

I would like to piggy back off the original poster. Can anyone link History programs by research. A good combination of cost and respectability is what I'm looking for.

The last time I checked the M.Prof from Middlesex University (UK) was reasonably pricesd
    http://www.mdx.ac.uk/study/wbl/courses/maprofstudie.asp
    http://www.mdx.ac.uk/research/docs/dprof-regs08-09.pdf
They also offer the following by DL

There is a M.Phil. by public works
    http://www.mdx.ac.uk/research/degrees/routes.asp

I suggest you outline your goals and contact them to learn if they can meet your needs.
(I find it takes lots of searching on their various sites to pin down information - for example I found they have a masters in design engineering so I was thinking of a variant of this thru the M.Prof route).

It also helps that the US Dollar is gaining strength against the UK Pound.

You can find Masters degrees by research in the UK, Australia and South Africa. The British and Australian programs are well respected but substantially more expensive than the South African programs. The only thing that might come close is something from the Open University of Malaysia.

University of Southern Queensland has a M.Eng that is research based only. However, this type of degrees are not exactly easy, they tend to take longer than the course based master's so I hope you are not thinking that you will be shorting the completion time only because is research based.

  8. Yes, they are certainly not an easy option. Some of the Australian universities make it clear that they are not for everyone. As I understand it, people who are qualified (either honours1 or honours2A generally or equal) often go straight to a Ph.D. Usually, an honours masters requires a thesis of 40-60,000 words while a Ph.D requires around 100,000. While they are very demanding, the attraction for Australians is that they are not only free but that the university will often help meet any costs you have such as travel etc.

Do these schools that award degrees by research offer any help along the way with feedback on your research, progress, advising etc.? I'm not sure I'd know where to start on my own in regards to a 90,000 dissertation for a PhD (or even 60,000 for a masters).

  10. With the provisio that I can only comment on the Australian situation...

All research degree students are assigned a supervisor who will be an academic with an interest or background in the topic you want to research. Their job is to be your advisor and to help you to produce good quality work. So "yes", they will provide plenty of help and feedback.
