My ALEKS course has been added to my transcript at Charter Oak. It took approximately four weeks from the time I placed the request with ACE. This is the way it looks. ALEK 0004 College Algebra w/Trigonometry P - 3.00 3.00 I had wondered if it would say ALEX. FYI, I also completed Beginning Algebra and Intermediate Algebra but Charter Oak only accepts College Algebra or above as a minimum math requirement. Now I'm wondering how the ALEKS is transcripted and what the minimum math requirements are for TESC and Excelsior?
Thanks! Thanks for posting! We are planning to have my daughter take Intro to Stats with ALEKS - good to know that Charter Oak accepts ALEKS!
I emailed my adviser about other ALEKS math classes and received this answer. The two lowest level classes that you may consider for the math requirement are "College Algebra" and "Introduction to Statistics." I haven't declared an area of concentration yet but I have corresponded with my adviser about different options. Here's a reply that other folks might find helpful. "Our Psychology, Criminal Justice, and Human Services/Applied Behavioral Science: Psychology concentrations all require 3 credits in Research Methodology. The prerequisite requirement for Research Methodology is 3 credits in Statistics. So essentially, they do require statistics. Our Liberal and Individualized Studies concentrations do not require the statistics or the research methodology.
Aleks question? Hello, you mentioned that COSC only accepted college algebra as part of the math requirement. But were you able to apply intermediate and beginning algebra as part of liberal arts or free electives? Please advise as I am wanting to enroll in COSC, and as of this point, I have only completed beginning algebra so want to save time if neccessary.
Unfortunately, no. College Algebra/Trig is the only one showing on the transcript. No mention of the other two Algebra classes I completed. The good news is they accepted all the FEMA classes I completed so I'm now 14 credits closer to completion.
As best as I can tell, you have to consider Beg. Algebra as a MATH086 or similar. This won't necessarily "count" toward a degree, but there are plenty of reasons this might be a good idea. 1. Your math skills are starting at this level. If that's the case, there isn't a reason NOT to start here. My son is working this class right now, and it's very good. Certainly not time wasted to have a strong foundation. 2. You are looking to take a 100 level math class at a college with pre-req requirements/placement via compass or asset test. Having this class could trump the placement requirement (suppose you test in under 086, then you HAVE to otherwise start there- this way you can go right in) 3. You are looking at taking a science lab class. Many (all?) of these have math pre-reqs. Even general biology or general chemistry require math skills and or credit at 086 or higher. If you are thinking about taking labs locally and then transferring them onto a transcript (big 3 for example) the CCs have armed gate-keepers for these classes LOL. They can and will make like difficult if you don't have already have math credit. A class like this one gets you in to the CC without all of the hoops of taking those classes locally first.
I had my FEMA classes transcripted with FCC, then had FCC send them to Charter Oak. I apologize for not including that in my previous post. I mailed the paperwork to FCC on Jan. 21, 2008 and the credits were added to my Charter Oak Transcript a couple of days ago. So, about a week to finish the classes, and another six week to process everything. A very simple way and short time frame for 14 credits.
