I need a little help/advice from the group. I’ve completed 24 credits in a MBA program. I need only 4 more classes to complete the program. I’m scheduled to take 2 classes (8-week) starting in 3 weeks and had hoped to take the remaining two in the summer.

One of the summer courses needs to be an elective and the other was a required course. I had to have my advisor permission for these courses. Another student had already been give permission for the elective course, so I thought it was just a formality. To my surprised I was told both courses were unacceptable. I offered two other possible elective courses which were also denied. I was told I needed to take an elective that was being offered in November’09…that she just happened to be teaching.

I explained to her that I wanted to finish the degree this summer and that other students had been granted permission for the class. She was unwavering and would not change her mind.

I have now written to the Dean of Graduate Studies and given her the complete details of the situation. I’ve been promised a response by next week.

I’ve spent a lot of time, effort, and money to get to this point in the program. I feel I’m being held hostage by some (…insert any word you’d like….) Advisor. I’m so mad at this point I do not know what to do.

Does anyone know of any Graduate programs that work like Excelsior’s bachelors program? I’ve got 24 credits, I doubt if any program would accept that many credits. I have 6 more credits scheduled to start in three week, so I don’t want to take any more here if they’ll just be useless.

Any thoughts at this point would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Unless there is something you aren't telling us, you don't need a new school, you need a new advisor. Any advisor who doesn't work his or her buttocks off to help students graduate on time is doing it wrong.

I agree. I have sent emails to my NCU advisor stating that I did not mean to make them work...help me understand your role as an advisor. I have also contacted the dean and told the dean that the advisor is getting in my way of completing a degree and could they help me understand the role of the advisor. I did get a new advisor and she emails a response when I ask a question plus she calls me as a follow up.

You are the customer, make them work for your money!

    Yes. Well kinda.
Excelsior's MBA program will accept 24 graduate credits (you could petition for more).
