I am curious about this, and have a question. I see people put "Excelsior University" on their resume. Does it sound right? Does it make a different between Excelsior College and Excelsior University?

The name of the school is Excelsior College, so putting "Excelsior University" on a resume is just wrong. On the other hand, Google shows an "Excelsior University" in Seabrook, Texas, but it's a daycare, so I'm hard-pressed to think of a reason that it would show up on your resume.

That is a huge difference. In fact, I'd consider it a lie if I caught it on a resume. If I interviewed someone that had put Excelsior University when they clearly meant College, I wouldn't hire them. It could be a mistake or it could be unethical. Either way, I'd pass on hiring them.

My understanding is that New York State only allows the "university" name to be used by schools that offer doctorates.

If I were in a position to evaluate resumes, I'd do the following. First, check the websites of Excelsior and Middle States Association to see if a name change was authorized. Then, I'd check to see if there is some mill named Excelsior University playing off the name of the very legitimate Excelsior College. Or maybe they graduated from the pre-school of that name www.excelsioruniv.com in Texas.
