    Hello,

I'm new to this forum and need some advice regarding distance PhD English programs. Does anyone know of any that offer a concentration in literary and cultural studies. Thanks.

Umm, I'm a little bit out of my league in this but I think of PhD English programs as being mostly about literature. PhD programs that focus on literacy I'm guessing would be more likely found in the area of Education. PhD programs in Cultural Studies (this might mean many diffeent things) might be more likely found in the area of Sociology.

On the other hand, doctoral programs are all about specialization and who's to say that a doctoral dissertation in English couldn't be about literacy or cultural studies. Even with that I don't think you'll find a doctoral program in English that specializes in either of those two topics. I think you have to find a program and bend it to your interests.

There's not many PhD programs in English. Here's one

"Literary" not literacy. They are not the same.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked them out. Also to Sowak for pointing out I'm looking for a literary studies concentration- critical discourse- that sort of thing. Do most or all PhD distance programs require some type of on-campus residency requirement. Does anyone here have any experience with Old Dominion? Are there any other programs anyone can suggest? I would really like to start for Fall 09 if its still possible. Thanks again

Not exactly what you're looking for, but Texas Tech University offers an online PhD in Technical Communication & Rhetoric.

In addition, UNISA (University of South Africa) offers a DLitt (Doctor of Literature and Philosophy) in Theory of Literature.

I sent them an email. If that number is correct then this is the program I have been looking for. I tried to contact them once a couple years ago and they were difficult to get a reply from, we'll see this time..

    David,

That's great! I hope it works out for you. Yes, the tuition at UNISA is "stupid cheap". ;)

BTW, I would highly recommend that you contact IACI, the designated agent for UNISA in the US and Canada. While the IACI site appears as though it was created back in 1997, the company and the service provided is completely legitimate. IACI really helps cut through the morass that is the UNISA application process.

According to the 2009 fees page, the annual tuition for a UNISA Literature doctoral student is $1290US. Still not bad at all!

Finally, here is a list of all of the programs that UNISA currently offers: http://brochure.unisa.ac.za/brochure/showlist.aspx?d=progs

    Good Luck!

Maybe I'm confused, but haven't we had a PhD in English thread recently? Anyways, the PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences of the Union Institute & University www.tui.edu could be used to fashion a PhD in English. If a summer-only PhD in English is acceptable to you, there's always Indiana University of Pennsylvania www.iup.edu . I'm not sure whether Old Dominion University's www.odu.edu PhD in English includes a literature component or not, but it might be worth a look. Then, of course, there are the foreign dissertation-only docs like University of Melbourne www.unimelb.edu.au , University of New England www.une.edu.au , and the University of Teesside www.tees.ac.uk .

Are any of these options close in price to UNISA?

Unfortunately, I've not yet done a price comparison yet.

I have been in contact with Dr. Michael Esselen via email and he has been very helpful so far with the UNISA application, though I have much to do to successfully apply.

I have been looking for some program of study outside of business. I've tried APUS MA Humanities and Political Sciences, tried the Harrison-Middleton DA only to drop out, and have searched for alternate programs in to no avail.

The DLitt looks perfect for my interests as I can combine the odd mix that I am looking for into a degree that will also serve well and is from a great school, and it is a higher order degree than my DBA so it makes some sense as a progression. Of course it is very possible they don't accept me because all my credentials and publications are business related, so this will be a fun process to go through.

I'm filling out the application and am writing a short 1-5 page description of my proposed research as I type. Great find and thanks for posting the DLitt link!
