Online degree for career changes

With the economy the way that it is and with more people looking to make a change to a career that may be more stable than their current position, I thought it would be both fun and useful if we could compile a list of online degrees/certificates that could help a person switch to a new career/profession.

 

There are two choices that come to me almost immediately. The first is a teaching certificate. You can have a Bachelors in almost anything and then you just need to take a few education courses, get through a student teaching gig and voila you're ready for a job as a public school teacher. As I understand it, if you've got a Math background you become an attractive catch. Next, I'd say look at an MBA. It almost doesn't matter what your background is, earning an MBA bumps you up into another bracket. Plus, there are lots of specializations or you can go generic.

There are so many places offering Education courses or MBA degrees that I'm not going to link to any specific programs.

 

Getting a masters degree in library and information science will let you switch careers to working in a library.

 

Some Ideas...

• Veterinary Technician
• Pharmacy Technician
• Teacher
• Engineer (tough, but not impossible)
• Librarian
• Just about any IT field
• Public Health professional
• Accountant

 

Or allow you to work in the information consulting industry or as a researcher in a lot of other places.

Is there such a thing as an online degree that is not for career changers? (Braces himself, awaiting the "would you like fries with that" jokes.)

 

Depending on your state and if you have an accredited bachelor's degree, I would opt for alternative certification:

I have seen MFA degrees in creative writing available via distance. It's hard to imagine that would lead directly to a career change. You certainly don't need a degree to be a writer.

 

I interpret the question as "What degrees can be used for multiple career areas?; my list would include:

Mathematics (teaching, engineering, statistics, research, finance, government)

Quality Assurance (manufacturing industry, service industry, teaching, research, consulting)

Law (law, insurance, government, industry, teaching)

become a medical research evaluator

AND build websites.....

he might also consider running for public office....

 

He seems like quite the entrepreneur. It is one thing to be associated with an unaccredited institution but quite another to be associated with, or operate, a diploma mill.
