    Hi,
I was hoping I could get some insight about online degrees compared to conventional degrees. Specifically, I want to obtain my Masters in Electrical Engineering. I'm debating whether I should get a conventional degree from the Cullen College of Engineering at U of H or online degree from SMU.

Which school is better in the eyes of a potential employer? Currently, I am in IT and although I have a BS in Computer Engineering I have no engineering experience.

Are there anyone taking courses or have obtained a degree from SMU through their Distance Education program? If so, how was your experience?

On U.S. News website, the Cullen College of Engineering at U of H is ranked 87th while the Lyle School of Engineering isn't ranked on their list. Of course, if I had the money I'd apply to UT which is ranked 11th.

    Any feedback is welcomed.

Since you posted these two schools, I assume you live in Texas. Therefore, you should stick to the region, especially working and attending school as the same time. So, you don't have a problem to explain whether your degree is B&M or Distance. However, there are several thing you must consider into which institution better than another. If the financial issue, then should stick with University of Houston because it is cheaper. Since you want to consider Southern Methodist University, of course it is popular in Texas beside University of Texas at Austin. I don't have a degree at SMU yet, but I am working on it....I plan to complete by the end of this year. Honestly, I have a great experience, I consider SMU because the tuition break for Military. If I have to pay the full tuition, then I would consider Columbia University (CVN) or University of Southern California (DEN).

There are several more schools you should consider.

These schools charge between $1,100.00 - $1,300.00 per credit

    Columbia University (East Coast)
    Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (East Coast)
    Georgia Tech (East Coast/ Southern)

    Stanford University (West Coast)
University of Southern California (West Coast)
University of California - Los Angeles (West Coast)

    Southern Methodist University (Texas/Southern)

Edited: University of Florida (Southern); If I am not mistaken, the program offers at distance learning; however, students have to take the exam in Florida. I think Dr. Randell has the answer for this.
