UMass Boston is a cool place. It's on Columbia Point, right next to the Kennedy Library. It's a commuter school but they've got a plan to put in some dorms. You get there on the subway (that branch is called the Red Line) and there's also a commuter rail station nearby. Obviously you can also drive, but Morrissey Blvd. is not a friendly road during the morning commute. Cutthroat Boston commuters are just a little bit scary. I'd advise you to take the Red Line/train. The students come from all over greater Boston, a very diverse group. Nice. Oh yeah, they have some distance learning programs too.

thanks very much u all for ur input, especially Kizmet ,I wish I would be at Boston to study at that pretty cool one but unfortunately i m not in US.
Well actually I was asking for a degree in Linguis./TEFL/TESOL for one of my friends. She has recently completed her BBA from a non US university n wants to pursue her career as an overseas TEFL/TESOL/linguistic teacher. But after surfing the sites of above mentioned universities I ve discovered tht she might not be eligible for admission both at UMass n University of Portsmouth, as both of them require either previous experience as a TEFL teacher or a related bachelors degree to lingusitics/TEFL/TESOL as unfortunately she lacks both as she has no previous working experience. So I will be welcoming other suggestions as well. She would prefer a School with total cost of under 5000$ for the whole programme.I hope she would be able to find one.thanks

OK. So your friend is in another country. Which one? I'm guessing that she has the language? Why not a school there?

thanks Kizmet, well I m currently residing in Middle East n working here.My friend is in Middle East (KSA) n has completed her BBA from an online university. As we r not citizens of KSA so international tuition rates r applied to us which r around atleast 10,000$US /year for any course in English which she cant afford ,thts why she s looking for a low cost, accredited online programme.I hope I m clear this time.Is there a possibility to find a masters in her desired disciplines, under or of 5000$US ,from an accredited Online University?

Unfortunately, it will be next to impossible to find a good program for under $5000, especially if you are talking about a 2-year MA program. Maybe English-speaking countries other than the US offer better options.

Here's another thing to consider for your friend. It sounds like she wants to go become an English language instructor rather than a researcher in linguistics/applied linguistics, right? If this is the case, she should definitely get some teaching experience before pursuing a master's degree. Most programs require at least one practicum as part of the curriculum, and since this is difficult to to with online programs, there is a reason why quality online programs require some background in the profession. Online education can do a lot, but there are limits. Your friend doesn't want to end up with an MA without ever having been in a classroom.

hi - check out the online MA in Linguistics from Monash University. One may pursue the degree via Open University Australia or directly via Monash. Sorry, I'm on my phone now so I am unable to provide links. Tuition is reasonable.

    Good luck!
