Hi Tom - I've never been a CSU student but it's a good school, probably not top-tier, in Australia. We hear about CSU pretty often because they do a lot of distance learning degree stuff. It's a legitimate degree. It's attractiveness might depend on why you want the degree. What is your goal?

    HI Tom,

Got DBA in 2007 from CSU and visited twice.

I've been happy with the experience and had a very good advisor to get me through the process for over 3 years.

    Hope this helps.

I am a student with the university and will be enrolled with advanced standing in one of their Doctorates. I was enrolled to complete a Doctorate program with them, but unfortunately became ill and had to exit early. I recommence in June next year.

There are two Doctorates for police. One with no thesis or portfolio work, and the other with those requirements. The first is for senior officers in the Australian Policing environment. The second is for those desirous of obtaining senior management positions.

The faculty has real world experience of substance in this area and also has good educational backgrounds. Charles Sturt has the most extensive range of police courses in the Southern Hemisphere. It also runs all the rookie training for the New South Wales Police Service. This service has about 20,000 officers from memory, probably more. In any case, it is the largest service in Australia. The university is also closely aligned to the Australian Federal Police which is similar to the FBI in the US (not quite the same concept).

In terms of prestige, there is not the wide variance of difference between universities in Australia as there is in the US. All are controlled in one way or another by government. Charles Sturt University is a regional State University of New South Wales and has substantial federal funding from the Australian Government.

Charles Sturt is probably best known in Australia for its involvement in policing and its close relationship with two of the major police services is evidence of that. I do know that it has a foothold in the Canadian and US law enforcement market. I often heard the faculty talk about their North American students.

The Australian Dollar is about 70 cents US which may make it more interesting as a consideration.

Hi guys - I'm just wondering. Have things advanced to the point where you need a doctoral degree in order to be competitive for Police Chief positions. I know that people always seek out advantages but I just don't think of Police Chiefs as needing a PhD. Maybe if it's a big city type environment? Probably I'm just out of the loop. Would a PhD in Public Administration be a good choice or should someone go for the more hardcore Police Science type of degree. I'm just curious.

    Hello,

I have been doing the adjunct thing for one school for a long time and the CSU DBA was not questioned.

It bumped me to the doctoral rates per hour immediately for the classes I teach.

So it was readily accepted in my experience.
