There's been some fun stuff happening here with the new CLEP...Exams forum off and running. Thanks to everyone who's helping. I thought I'd start a thread that might be a bit more quiet but, hopefully, just as strong.

I'd like to highlight a distance learning school or program each week. My hope is to steer away from all the schools/programs that get the regular mentions. I'd like to highlight the schools that we never hear about. Maybe a school has just one distance program. Maybe a school that's far, far away. Let's put a small spotlight on it, even if it's just for one week. I hope people will join in but please don't throw in those schools that have become known as "less than wonderful." Thanks.

    Here's my first mention:

The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland has a nice looking program in Biomechanics. You can earn a MSc, a Postgrad Diploma or a Postgrad Certificate through distance learning.

Kizmet, I gave this a sticky; maybe a new thread should be started for each featured program/school?

Something like; "School/Program of the Week - Podunk State University Ph.D. in Extra Sensory Perception"?

The following website has a lot of information on universities that are rarely discussed. Lets dig in and showcase those distance learning programs ( if they do offer any ) :D. The website has a nice career section and country guide for anyone seeking a job globally. http://www.topuniversities.com/

    University of Toledo

I like this school because it has programs on all levels. They've got certificate programs, Associates degrees, Bachelors, Masters and even a Doctoral degree program. We should know more about it. Start now.

    Oh yeah....Uri Geller was the chair of the department, until Steve Levicoff found this clip and e-mailed it to the entire administration, faculty, and student body, so he had to resign in disgrace;

Oxford University (yes, THE Oxford University) offers a number of short courses in subjects ranging from archaeology to philosophy to economics. Each of these short courses are worth 10 CATS points, which equates to about 3.3 semester hour credits.

While it is not possible to complete an entire undergraduate degree through the Oxford DL system, there are a number of "award bearing courses" available online (some programs require residencies as well). One may complete an undergraduate advanced diploma in either Data and Systems Analysis (entirely online) or Local History (also entirely online). Postgraduate options include a Postgraduate diploma in Paediatric Infectious Diseases (online and residencies are required), a Postgraduate certificate in Nanotechnology (online for the PG certificate, 2nd year in Oxford to complete the MSc) and a Master of of Studies in International Human Rights Law (online and 2 summer sessions in Oxford are required).

    Enjoy!

This week I've decided to go out west for my pick of the week. I'm talking about Texas A&M University. Now TAMU comes up in conversation every now and then and so some of you might be thinking that I'm a little bit of track considering that I started this thread to talk about quiet or unknown programs. I think you'll understand though when I tell you that I'm highlighting the TAMU Department of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

    http://dist-ed.tamu.edu/

They offer five different Masters degrees in the general area of agriculture. In addition they've got an EdD program in Agricultural Education. Of course, they've also got five other Masters degree programs sprinkled through the rest of the university that can be earned 100% online as well as a bunch of others that are partially online. This includes two additional doctoral degree programs

We never hear much about agricultural degrees but they're just as valuable as any other. Go Aggies!

BTW, keep those cards and letters coming in. Suggestions are always welcome.

Thanks for the Oxford links, japhy.

I'm seriously considering applying to the Data and Systems Analysis program.

OKOKOK, so I'm a little late. It's been a big week around my neighborhood and I just remembered that I hadn't posted my pick of the week.

It's not all that unusual to find an Australian university mentioned on this forum. They have very good reputations and offer some great distance learning programs. But what's that off on the edge of Australia? It's smaller and, well let me take off my glasses and get a good look. Oh yeah! It's New Zealand! And what do we have in New Zealand? We've got a very nice set of distance learning programs coming to you from

    The University of Otago

    http://www.otago.ac.nz/courses/distance_study/pdf/DL_Prospectus_2009.pdf

They have programs on all levels. So many certificate programs and diploma programs and postgrad diploma programs that I got writers cramp just trying to make a list. What was most notable to me was that they have an amazing number of certs and diplomas in the medical/healthcare field. I'm talking about every specialty area under the sun. Plus degrees in everything from Theology to Pharmacy. You've got a link to the distance learning prospectus (52 pgs of pdf) above where all the programs are described. If you're interested beyond that you can find your way to the university homepage easily enough. OTAGO!

You're welcome. I'm thinking about applying to that program as well.

I think that I can safely say that I've never seen this school mentioned on our forum. You've probably heard of it, I know I have heard of it before, just not in the context of distance learning. So say hello to Lehigh University:

    http://online.lesn.lehigh.edu/

They've got a nice little collection of degrees on offer by distance learning especially in the area of Engineering. Also, they've got some cert programs including one in Project Management. It's worth a peek and it's my pick of the week.

Where I've been hanging out it's been coldcoldcold. Don't get me started about the snow. So maybe it's a tiny bit of a surprise that I'm going to pull you all WAY up north to the University of Manitoba.

    http://umanitoba.ca/extended/distance/

They have some very nice looking degree programs up there. You'll note that they are in areas that are frequently mentioned here on degreeinfo. Enjoy!

Hope I'm not out of line...

I wanted to let everyone know about the University of Tennessee distance programs. Yes we are famous for football but UT is a fine institution who has quietly amassed a very nice distance learning division. They offer both a degree track as well as independent study. The courses are extremely affordable when compared to standard tuition rates.

I'm talking about the University of Alaska

You're not out of line. I'm glad that people will post to this thread when they want to send a shout out to programs that are not well known.
