    Hi all,

What countries offer the most favourable conditions of welfare for PhD students?

I know universities in Denmark (especially) and the U.S have fantastic conditions for Ph.D students and i quote

What other european universities offers similar conditions for Ph.D applicants? Please advice.

BTW: The field of study or specialisation for the Ph.D is not the most important factor at this time. Please feel free to air your mind and give advice.

    Thanks

Sam, what do you mean by the field of study or specialisation is not important? Generally, that is the most important thing when pursuing a Ph.D.

When you apply to a Ph.D. in Europe, you have to present a research proposal since many programs do not have coursework requirements if you have a master's degree.

What field is your master's degree? Perhaps then we can help you.

I'll add on to what Scott has said. Sam has only listed a Bachelors degree in his sig line. I'll assume (I know, I know) that he'd list a Masters if he had one. Further assuming that Sam is asking on his own behalf, I'll say that he may not qualify for entry into any PhD program unless it's in business. Even then I'll venture that an MBA is generally expected. I hope that Sam will forgive me if I've stepped out of bounds.

It is possible for entry into a doctoral program without a master's degree, if the bachelor's degree is with honours and in the same discipline as the doctorate. However, most universities will place the applicant in an M.Phil. or M.Res.-equivalent degree first with the ability to transfer into the Ph.D. if good progress is made.

You could be right but I have to say that I'd be a bit surprised to discover that a person with a Bachelors in Business could gain entrance to an MPhil/PhD program in, let's say, Anthropology (or some other divergent field).

That's true but it depends on the country. Only universities in Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Turkey and the United Kingdom offer that option. Here is my scource for that claim: http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/portal/page/portal/Eurydice/PubPage?pubid=086EN&fragment=14&page=1

Agreed. The BA(Hons)/BSc(Hons) would HAVE to be in the same discipline as the doctorate.

Thanks to all contributors,...and Kizmet (smiles)

Well, my bachelors degree in business is with honours and i'm looking at a Ph.D in business with specialisation in IT Mgt. or MIS (Mgt. Info. Sys.) and for now i'm keeping ALL my options open.

I could take the Ph.D program in any accredited university WORLD WIDE.

Please feel very free to air your thoughts.

Seasons greeting to all my buddies here...

I would suggest a UK university then, since they are known to take honours degree applicants into their Ph.D. Depending on where you are located, you could probably negotiate some reasonable residencies.

Aston Business School is a top-ranked and AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA-accredited business school that offers a Ph.D. and DBA by distance. I think there is a 1-month/year residency requirement though. They have a Operations and Information Management Research Group that could probably provide support you through the Ph.D. There is only one course to take: The Research Methods Course, and it is available online.

Many UK universities are probably in a similar position to take on external students. Since UK Ph.D.'s usually don't require coursework, they are quite flexible.

In that case, the possibilities are endless. Oxford or Cambridge might be good options.

One thing that might be a consideration is the language of instruction. Some places will work in English, some not. Do you speak any European languages aside from English?

Ah... the Sorbonne... excellent school if you can speak French. Not sure about their business school, even if they have one. There are a lot of French Grande Ecoles that have great business school offerings... many of them in English... EM Lyon, Grenoble-EM, etc... Then there is INSEAD, HEC Paris, Reims. Most of these are AACSB, EQUIS or AMBA accredited, or all three.

Good luck in picking just one!

I am looking out for accredited schools (located anywhere) having good research assistanship or graduate assistanship conditions (including funding/remuneration) for Ph.D students with IT Mgt. or MIS (Mgt. Info. Sys.) specialisation interests...any clues?

BTW: I have been researching myself but just need some help. Sorbonne doesnt have the IT Mgt. or MIS specialisation or even a close alternative...

I did my DBA in MIS at the University of Southern Queensland (Australia) as a external student (not online). Many Universities in the UK can accept you as a external student but none will provide with funding or assistanship as an external student. If you want funding, you need to be full time student on campus. A good starting point is IS world where many universities hunt for PhD students by providing funding. I decided to fund myself instead of taking a full time on campus program as I did not want to loose my house, job, etc over a PhD program. At the end, it was a smart move as most of the new PhD in MIS graduates are not getting jobs as University professors as Universities are not hiring MIS teachers due to the decrease of enrollments in this field (At least in North America).

Notice that external study is not the same as online study. External just means that you are not required to be on campus but the program requirements are exactly the same as on campus students. This type of programs are completely different to the online American PhDs that are designed for working adults therefore being more flexible.

Thanks RFValve the IS world website was useful....

Well, i prefer the full time on-campus student option for my doctoral studies, the only issue here is the funding...any ideas on funding opportunities for Ph.D students in IT Mgt. or MIS field,... anyone?

No offense, but then why are you making an inquiry on a distance learning board?
