Anyone know where there might be a DL Ph.D. in English/Literature/Related (that is NOT technical writing or similar), other than Old Dominion?

Also possibly interested in Ed.D. in English Teaching/Education (not ESL).

Any thoughts? DL Advanced English degrees seem to be harder to find than others.

The Union Institute & University's www.tui.edu PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences is always an option. If a good British-style dissertation-only doctorate suits your needs, the University of Melbourne www.unimelb.edu.au , the University of New England www.une.edu.au , and the University of Teesside www.tees.ac.uk will work. If a summer-only PhD suits your time schedule, Indiana Un9iversity of Pennsylvania www.iup.edu offers such a program.

There used to be something in Literature & Criticism and the Indiana University of Pennsylvania but I just sprinted through there and didn't see it. It might be worth a look (at a more leisurely pace). Beyond that I think you're going to have to cross a big expanse of ocean to get to the next alternatives. I'm thinking that there's a few in Australia. Look at Charles Sturt, Edith Cowan and Melbourne. As you're discovering, there are very few real choices in this area.

Thanks Ted. I had found the program but what I didn't find was the part where they say it can be done through distance learning. I still haven't found it. Please pardon me for being vague.

The PhD in English Literature & Criticism is available by summer-only residenies. The summer classes are five weeks long, which would be ideal for high school teachers and college professors. Ditto for the PhD in Composition & TESOL.

OK,cool. This makes it a lot like some of the low-residency MFA degrees I've written about. There are very few that are 100% distance learning but there are a little bunch of them available to those who have some flex time that they can use to travel to the campus. Thanks Ted.

Thank you all for the replies and suggestions. :)

Doctoral English programs are definitely difficult to find. As I mentioned initially, Old Dominion has the only program in the US that I know of that's a straight-up Ph.D. in English through distance. I'm hoping, in the next few years, that some other universities will follow suit. I'm not opposed to foreign universities, but because of financial matters, I prefer something here in the US.

    Again, thanks! :-D

Old Dominion is $796 per credit hour:

The expense was one of the reasons I was looking for something else. That's worse than UoP. I think. Nearly $2400 per course (provided the doctoral courses are 3 hours and not more). I'd like to be able to pay off the loans before I die once I make them. :p Hehe.
