Cool... does that have something to do with DL?

Yes, inasmuch as a world-class facility will land more research dollars for the institution and attract better teachers, both of which can be assets for the physics department (out of which the distance program is run).

The MSU program in beam physics is indeed cool, in part because there are so few DL programs involving advanced degrees in science (apart from "computer science"). However, it is not really a "distance" or "online" program in the way that those terms are usually understood here.

The program is offered to workers at particle accelerator laboratories worldwide. The labs provide a facility for live teleconferencing, and classes are held at certain times. From a student perspective, it's not that much different from any other B&M training program at the workplace: you show up in a specified room at a scheduled time and attend a lecture. The "distance" part is that the instructor may be hundreds or thousands of miles away.
